I hold in my hand a 1946/47 Gillette Aristocrat for today's shave. Given its vintage, I often consider the original owner and whether he served, as millions of others did, during World War II. If so, I can only imagine the cognitive dissonance of returning to the safety and comfort of home, the privacy of a dedicated bathroom, and the simple luxury of hot water on demand. Preparing for his daily shave, I wonder what he must have seen as he peered through the misted fog of the vanity mirror, transported to a long ago field during a lull in combat. His mind gazes on a faded memory of sitting cross legged and conducting a field shave in the embittered cold. He pauses to reflect on his nearby brothers in arms, preserving the memory of every face that never returned home, for they had made the ultimate sacrifice.


I will never know for certain. But I do wonder.
