Going somewhat Old School tonight.

prep - shower with Caprina Fresh Goat’s Milk Original Formula bar soap
razor - Gillette Single-Ring Old
blade - Astra Superior Platinum (18)
brush - Simpson Special 1
soap - Godrej Shaving Round
post - warm water rinse, DSA “Pure & Natural” alum, cold water rinse
aftershave - Chatillon Lux Pure Lavender

I'm going to miss the Pur Lavender AS when it's gone.
The scuttle belonged to my grandfather. Or maybe my great-grandfather. That part is not quite clear, but my grandmother had saved it for my Dad, and then my Mom gave it to me..
I filled it with hot tap water before my shower, by pouring it over the puck. A small puddle remained on the puck and the rest of it drained to the bottom, soaking the brush. Remember the raised edge of the puck? I'm pretty sure that it's there to keep that puddle.
I tried to build up thick creamy lather, but so much of it ran over the side, and it remained somewhat frothy. There just was not enough room to work the puck with the brush, even with the relatively small (20 mm x 43 mm) knot.

Nevertheless, it performed well enough.
It certainly doesn't keep the lather especially warm. For tonight's shave the water and lather were room temperature by the time I got around to using it. You can't warm up the brush by dipping it into the hot(tish) water in the bottom because it would just dilute the lather on the brush.
[font=Helvetica Neue]So, my theory is that vintage-style scuttles were not intended to have you make lather pr0n. Just a thin film of soap on the face does the job, especially with slick soaps like Godrej and Williams Mug. My ancestors (3/4 Scottish) were a thrifty lot, and this would certainly stretch the soap supply.[/font]
It's still better than using cold water straight from the tap.
If you want to shave with hot lather pr0n, get a modern Moss-style scuttle (it's unfortunate that they appropriated the name for it, because it is a totally different piece of equipment), or else a lather bowl that floats in the the hot rinse water in the sink.
