I have no problem purchasing high priced or expensive shaving products.  I have 60 soaps, softs soaps and creams many of which are expensive based on their weight.  I have a substantial amount invested in my many brushes as well as paying $299 for an ATT 5 piece razor.  There are however, products that I am not willing to pay ridicules prices for.  That is not to say that I disagree with those who do purchase such products nor am I attempting to convince others to follow my lead.  Everything associated with wet shaving is subjective and should stay that way.  The following just represents what I do.  There are two products that I have decided to use instead of more expensive ones.

The first is buying a hard soap in the in the company’s bowl.  If a refill is available I will purchase it.  For instance DR Harris sells for about $35 in their beech wood bowl.   But the refill costs about $18.  So, for the price of the puck in the bowl you can buy two refills.  L’occitane sells a puck of Cade hard soap for $12.  The bowl costs $28.  Several years ago I came across a product made by Pyrex and now Anchor Hocking makes the same thing.  It is a very heavy duty glass container with a sealable top that holds 8 ounces of liquid.  They are perfect for hard soap pucks.  The Pyrex sells for about $8.00 plus tax for four, about $2.40 each.  The Anchor Hocking sells for $5 and change for four about $1.40 each.  Thats a lot better than s starting price of $17 for a DR Harris bowl.  The tops completely seal the bowl so you can travel without the top falling off.  I keep mine in a large draw and they stack perfectly.  I currently am using 20 of them.  At least 90% of the soaps I purchased fit perfectly in them.  I only have a few brands that need trimming.  Those that are a little larger can be trimmed to fit.  I simply take a very sharp thin knife and carefully trim the edges.  I suggest not using a potato peeler.  Once I trim the excess off I push the puck into a bowl and press it down.  I take the excess pieces and cover the top of the puck, poor water over it and let sit for several minutes, drain it and flatten them down with my thumbs and let dry.  After about three or four loading with a brush they appear to be gone.  The bowl on the left is an example.  The one in the middle was a puck or DR Harris Windsor that fit perfectly and the third is smaller.  Wet the bottom of the puck and it glues itself to the bowl.

And the second are bowls to make lather in.  For a year or two I’ve faced lathered with at least 90% of my soaps and creams.  Recently, I started bowl lathered again after I read a thread “Don’t quit your lather too soon”.  The first product I used when I started bowl lathering again was Queen Charlotte, Fougere.  I was able to make a half a bowl of lather and had much more than what I needed for three passes.  I was very impressed because I never got that much lather from this product while face lathering.  This is another product, that I am not willing to buy expensive lather bowls or scuttles.  I know and understand that many shavers collect these and there are many people who make custom bowls and scuttles which I think are impressive looking products.  In the photo below you can see what I use to bowl lather.  Each of the 4 can hold 8 ounces of liquid.  The orange, black and yellow ones are actually Salsa bowls that you can generally buy at Mexican food stores.  Here in the Southwest there are several very large Mexican super markets that sell these useful bowels.  And, the best part, they only cost $1.49.  The green one my wife found buried in a kitchen cabinet.  I use that one to soak my brush in with distilled water while I shower.  I am not suggesting however, that people use these instead of the collection of bowls and scuttles.  But, for those starting to wet shave or bowl lathering it is a cheap way of trying.

Part I - Refills

I concur 100%. Buying the container is a waste of money. I never buy the container. Why waste $18 on the iColonia terra cotta bowl? Waste of money. The same is true for ALL the soaps with particular emphasis on C&S.  $35 vs $160. Sure. Rolleyes Not in my life time. I just don't get it. Unless you are wealthy, whats the point?

Part II - bowls.

Rick DeWise https://brushnsoapnblade.wordpress.com/2...aving-day/ has been advocating the Salsa Bowl, sanded inside, for two years. But now he switched to the Suribachi bowl https://damnfineshave.com/thread-lather-monster $12 and works well.

Now for a scuttle, buying a second a is no brainer. Its far, far cheaper and you will never see a pottery defect. Go for the Georgetown seconds. Awesome scuttles.

But yeah, I see a lot of money wasted of packaging. To each their own if they want to collect packages and that is one reason I NEVER evaluate the package. It goes in the trash.

After a couple of years being a maniac in wet shaving I too have started examining my soap/cream decisions. I refuse to pay over $20 for ANY soap. The most I've payed for soaps would be Pannacrema Nuavia Blu and Rossa (ended up being $120USD), Saponoficio Varesino (26USD) and a few others. I do not find these soaps to be worth it in any fashion, because Barrister & Mann Glissant, Reef Point, Stirling, and some other soaps at a MUCH better price per ounce outperform these IMO.

Playing off what you said to start the thread, Pannacrema Nuavia and Rossa are very nice soaps, but they are SUPER expensive and I'm sure part of all of this, is that "nice" jar. It is NOT worth it to me to get the container, that I will have nothing to do with once the soap is finished. In addition, it highly irritates me, that Pannacrema would not offer a refill so that one could reuse this "beautiful" container, but would have to buy container, after container, after container to keep using the soap. There is no freaking way I'm going to do that. I will enjoy them one time, done. DR Harris is another. I like an idiot, bought the bowl and the puck. This was $36USD. At least the Pannacrema performs. The DR Harris is passable at best, but is out performed by almost every single other soap I own, including every artisan product as well as Cella, Tabac, Mitchell's Wool Fat, all of which DR Harris normal puck costs more than. That was a total waste. I never use the DR harris and its just sitting there gather dust at a cost of $36USD, in its nice bowl.

ugh. This turned into more of a rant than anything. I suppose in the end, I do agree with you. If one can try a refill, get the refill. The nicey nice container is not worthwhile for my use case, as I just lump all of my soaps into a big tupperware tub to put on a shelf so its all organized.

I agree about your comment regarding the Salsa bowl. Originally I sanded the inside of the orange bowl, used it twice than I became concerned that the roughness if the sanded plastic could damage my brush. I stopped using the sanded one. The black and yellow ones are not sanded and they work just fine.

I tend to agree on the soaps although I do often purchase in original containers. Can't think of a single instance where they weren't re-purposed as change holders, etc. after finishing the soap, regardless of buying a refill. Those Pyrex bowls are indeed nicely sized and inexpensive, heavy duty kit. I have an AH soup mug I picked up years ago that also has the same style lid and it's a great container as well.

I don't bowl lather however have several bowls used for soaking brushes and they are all cheapies from Target or similar. The one seeing the most use is the green bowl that comes with VdH set. Not much to look at but gets the job done and is perfectly sized for my needs/taste.

Several years ago I purchased DR Harris Arlington in the beech bowl. Today, most of the finish (lacquer, varnish, shellac I am not sure what they use) has worn off on of the wood. The bowl cost me about $18 and it is almost bare wood.

Agreed. I can reuse the jar for other refills but without a PC refill, I'm not sure I can justify buying another container. This is a reason I refused to buy Boellis Panama in the coffret. For $115, they can keep it and lose sales when the refill was $48 but unavailable this year. Their loss.

Admittedly other bowls are easy to use and save on cost, but I really like the old wooden bowls from Penhaligon's and Floris and will take them if I have the choice.

In the past few months, I’ve acquired a few shaving soap jars from a well-known retailer, and then I ordered some more from a wholesale company that several well-known vendors use for their shaving soaps.

So I did end up paying a bit for just empty plastic jars, but now I have several unmarked high-quality jars that I can use for refills and samples. In the long run, I’m hoping it will be worth it.

Sure, it would be nice to have an i Coloniali or PannaCrema ceramic bowl, but especially in the latter case, what’s the point when you can’t even purchase a refill once the original soap is finished? (Well, actually in both cases, now that i Coloniali is discontinued.)

Now, if I only used one or two soaps all the time, I’d go for a nice concrete bowl from Etsy or something similar as a ceramic version, but I’m definitely not there yet, and probably never will be. It’s nice to have variation.

I agree about the cost of wet shaving, I went to it to save money but, it sure can become a money pit real quick. I also buy the replacements pucks and I go to Crate and Barrel and buy the large Ramekins for 3.50 a piece for my soap. I did pay for the Fine lather bowl but other than that, I look for deals.
