Soap pricing

Not too long ago, I made the argument that $75 for a tub of MdC soap was insane. The case was made that this 3X milled soap lasts forever, has great shaving properties, great scent and the cost per shave was quite probably less than a $15 soap. I now have 3 MdC tubs.
Sē’bŭm...not so much, although I own a tub, I’d never buy it again. B&M, GN, CRSW, A&E, Ethos and GD are all just as good for a fraction of the price.
I would also say that the soaps that Rod makes in his Stirling Soap factory are damned hard to beat. 5.8 oz for $13.60. Excellent products.
Buy what you like...and maybe quality is better than quantity...

You can replace "soap" with anything else and you'll have the exact same conversation.

Part of this conversation also has to be the rate of success of the brand marketing. A soap (or any other product) can carry a higher price tag, but if they are successful at delivering the "sizzle," many consumers will overlook the higher price.

That's why product names, labels, presentation boxes, etc can be very valuable in justifying the higher price. I am looking for the total experience on premium priced gear.

A good price range is....whatever you're willing to pay for a product that works for YOU. 

If a $5 soap works for you, great...but if not, find something that does and go with it.  At least that's what I do!

Price per ounce might be a better indicator on price.  Most soaps are $5-7/ounce.

I think Andrew nailed it.  I have superb soaps in several price ranges and would replace (and have replaced) tubs I have used up.  Unless the price of a particular favorite skyrocketed ridiculously or there was a reformulation that I did not care for then price would be the least of the variables for me.

I'm not sure, andrewjs18.  I couldn't find anything on line.  I still have a tube and do use it from time to time.

I'd be unlikely to spend $30 on a single soap that I've never tried before, but I wouldn't mind an assortment of, say, five 1 oz. tubs at that price. Larger than most sampler kits.
Less of a gamble that way.

As far as "overpriced soaps" go, I'd point the finger at the products that I find in my local drugstores and department stores, with the exception of Williams Mug. It's really cheap, so the bar is pretty low for it.
You can get RazoRock soaps that are priced about the same as Wilkinson Sword soap in the blue bowl or a tube of Gillette Pure, but any of the RR soaps blow the doors off the WS and Pure, performance and scent-wise.
I would have included Proraso Green croap in that group, but recently (after 4 years) I've begun to not hate it.
