I’ve gotten used to (and enjoy) the smokiness of the original, after I let go of my expectations to find a discernible rose scent in there. However, it’d be interesting to be able to compare the original with a newer version.

(By the way, I have no idea how one could order a newer version, if one wanted to. The best way would probably be to contact Ryan @ Tallow + Steel directly. On the other hand, the smoky original became such an overnight sensation, that perhaps the real question then is how one would score one of those… In that sense, I suppose I should count myself lucky.)

I have a brick and mortar store near me I'll just go sniff them again and see if there is a difference. If not I'll bug Ryan lol. But he says he has some things in the works so will let him work.

From Scott’s website... Birch tar adds a slight smokiness that represents the ever-present smell of burning leaves that heralds the arrival of autumn in Georgia.. From my perspective, it’s the perfect description.

Well, I took a sniff of Darkfall when I got home and I honestly don't get the smoke reference. It's a great smelling soap but definitely not smokey to me. What I was hoping for was more of a forest/light campfire type scent.

Stirling Gatlinburg has a smokey note to it.

Unforgiven by Mickey Lee is excellent and is one of my most favorite smokey shaving soaps.

I have Gatlinburg and as with Darkfall don't really get a smokey scent from the soap or aftershave. Unforgiven is on my shortlist though.

Shannon's Soaps Lit. Not really woodsy/smokey but more floral/smokey. I really like it.

I used the B&M Eventide today and to my nose it has some smoke masterfully blended into its smell. Absolutely delightful!

I would recommend trying these 2 soaps:

'After the Fire' from Groomin Dept and 'Spitfire' from P&B.

Only the first batch made in June was the very smoky batch. It was actually right where we wanted it, but since it was our first time working with Cade, we didn’t realize that over time it will continue to overtake the scent, so we cut it back.

We also learned that some people are very sensitive to smokey scents. I’ve had friends smell the exact same batch of the pure scent, and one could only smell campfire, and the other smelled green floral with a touch of smoke.

Anything available now at retailers will be the less-smoky version.

Cheers
