I'm sort of tempted to try using CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, which I employ daily as a preshave, as an actual shaving cream. In other words, I would apply it and just leave it on for my first razor pass, doing the second and third passes without reapplying anything except water. Has anyone here ever done something like this? I would just be doing it once out of idle curiosity, since it would remove one of my main sources of shaving enjoyment: the real shaving soap or cream.

I tried this with coconut oil, quite a few years ago, and it wasn't a pleasant. Smile
Good luck, John.

Thanks, Celestino. I may or may not be curious enough to actually try it.

John, I think you should, at least, try it for one pass so that you can fulfill your curiosity. Smile

OK, I tried it, and it wasn't very good at all for a WTG pass, not even as good as brushless shaving cream. I rapidly returned to using regular shaving soap lather.

You're quite welcome. I have but one skin to give for my forum...

John, I have to admit I had my doubts.  I once tried using just a shave oil, in place of a cream or soap, that claimed it could be used as a pre-shave or a replacement for shaving cream/soap.  It was awful and, needless to say, I only did that once.  I didn't think your skin moisturizer experiment would prove to be much better.

Definitely, thanks for taking one for the team.

Try a tub of Pinaud Clubman shaving cream. It's latherless, but if you slather it on generously (don't stint!), it makes a fine substitute for a real lather when you need to get the job done super-quick.

I've tried various other lather substitutes, but none were satisfactory. The one that comes close is shampoo/conditioner -- but Clubman cream is better.
