Thanks Eric and Mike! Some great info here.

So it looks like the only real difference is the handle. Both have a Hydromagic and non-Hydro version. Both also come in aggressive and non-aggressive versions.

The more I look, the more I see why Schick stopped making them. They couldn't figure out what design they wanted to go with. Any one 'type' had a handful (or more) variants. Sheesh.

Well, If I really like the shave with the I Hydro, I'm likely going to hunt for an I/J without the lever. I see that thing breaking it's so tiny and fra-gee-lé.

Thanks again for the links. [Image: giphy.gif?cid=349c9dd761ytpao4hbmnys96mk...y.gif&ct=g]

What's the Injector that supposedly is the same (at least shave wise) as the Hydromagic, but without the lever thingy? Is it the J?

According to the often referenced SchickTech source, there were I, J, and K Hydro-Magics.  The companion SchickYear source indicates they were made from 1954 through 1968.  As a starting point, you might look at I, J, and K models.

EDIT:  I did not see Eric's post before making my own.  I have an I1 (not hydro-magic) and an I2 (hydro-magic):

Mike, those look to be in fantastic condition!
The easy way to break up the razors is by handle types you have Type I handle. short handle Type J and long handle Type J. Regardless of rinse lever or plating or handle color they only came in those 3 handles types.

To clear up a few items, hydro-magic was not a catch all for all rinse lever razors regardless of Type. You had 3 specific rinse lever razor types, Hydro-magic, '500' and Lady Eversharp razors. Hydro-magic was from 54 - 61 as Type I handles and between 54 - 59 the '500' razors were considered a longer handle hydro-magic.

Rinse lever razors were produced until 1975 not 1968. The '500' razors were produced until at least 1972 and with Type L handles from 69 - 72 possibly as late as 1975. The Type K Lady Eversharps were produced until 1975 and all versions were made with rinse levers.

That is partially true. The ones made between 54 - 58 were only with rinse levers and both the Hydro-magic Type I and Type J '500' hydro-magic shave the same. They are easy to spot from later model ones since the rinse lever is shorter and has no writing on it. The ones they sold without rinse levers were Type G injectors between 54 - 57. Type G injectors officially are retired in 57 with the introduction of the non hydro-magic Type I and J razors without rinse levers

They start deviating in 1957 with the Type I and J razors that say Eversharp Schick on the razors head, They shave more aggressively than the hydro-magics being produced in 1957. In 1958 The Type I hydro-magic and Type J '500' hydro-magic become more aggressive and match how the Eversharp Schick stamped razors shave, they also coincide with the introduction of the longer rinse levers that have writing on them.

In 59 they drop Eversharp from the brand name and that also coincides with 2 new razors supplanting the older ones. First you have the Golden '500' which shaves milder than the earlier '500' razors. They later drop golden from the name and it becomes simply a '500' razor. Both those iterations shave the same. The Type I hydro-magic is discontinued but hangs around 61. The Type I and J razors without rinse levers change from Eversharp Schick to Schick Safety razors. They way the shave also changes something you can see by how much cap covers the blade i.e. less blade exposure.

In 64 is the last change due to branding, everything simply becomes Schick, Golden '500' becomes a '500' or Schick '500'. It still shaves the same as the Golden '500'. Schick Safety Razors are now branded as Schick with the upside down triangle on the razor heads. The razors also become less aggressive again due to the blade exposure being changed yet again. Also note 64 is first year they released the Type M adjustable, They were also from what I've read were originally go to introduce the DE razors this year but held them back until 65 because of all the changes going on and didn't want to overshadow sales of one over the other while they were new hot must have items for consumers.

So to recap you have 5 distinct shaves for Type I and Type J injectors

1. 54 - 58 Hydro-Magics. Type I or Type J '500'
2. 58 - 61 Type I Hydro-magic, 58-59, Type J '500', 57 - 59 Type I and J Eversharp Schick razors
3. 59-64, Type J Golden '500' and 64-69 Type J Schick '500'
4. 59-64 Type I and Type J Schick Safety Razors
5. 64-67 Type I and Type J Schick Razors

To hammer home the point about The longer handle Type J razors always being branded a '500' regardless of whether they were also called a hydro-magic. Makes it easier to understand if someone generically calls a Type J a '500'.
These adverts are from 1954 and 1955.

Holy Hydro-magics! Thank you, BBS! This is great info to share and I am sorely tempted to start a Hydro-magic collection, as I love the shaves as well as stores. And the ads are fun to read, giving us a window into the past.

If I join in these will be the 2 Schick injectors I plan to use.

Type E1 on the left, Type E2 first iteration on the right.

That particular E2 is one of the best kept secrets of Schick injector razors.

That particular E2 is more rare than E1 razors but not considered a collector's item like an E1. They made E1 razors from Dec. of 35 - 37 and made these particular E2 razors for only 6 months or so in 1937. Even though they are more rare the E1 is more scarce when it comes to finding one. You'll pay close to if not more than a $100 if a few collectors decide to get into a bidding war over an E1 but that E2 which for all practical purposes is an E1 without a square spring will almost never go above about $30 regardless of condition.
