Shave review of Janus Adjustable razor and Shave Off vs Gillette F4 Toggle

This may seem strange, but I was considering jumping in on the preorder except that I preferred the look of the razor without the changes that the preorder, numbered, limited edition had. I mean, I think it is cool that they are differentiated from any subsequent razors, but I didn't like the way it made the razor look.

So I'm really hoping this razor makes it into regular production.

I share the same feelings. I wasn’t big on the visual cues on the Toggle itself, I know where to grab it. 

I’m glad all of the preorders were sold, I’m excited to hear people’s thoughts on this one.

While I didn't understand/care for the logic behind the toggle lever indicator, I kinda like it. The serial Toggle had the dot on the toggle. I always coveted that silly little dot.

Production Update
2 of the 3 hardest blanks to produce are done.




I'm visiting the shop mid next week to check up on the door blanks.

Fabrication of the milling, assembly & laser marking fixtures is done, and all the off-the-shelf hardware used in the assembly has been ordered.
Project Schedule
How is the project tracking against the schedule?

I’m running 3 weeks behind schedule. I ran behind in securing all the pre-orders, and consequently, fell behind in placing the orders for the blanks.

Making the blanks is the slowest of all the processes and cannot be sped up because it would adversely affect part quality. The PNs that have yet to run are programmed and ready to go as soon as the machine opens. Once the blanks are done, the pace will pick up and the updates will get beefy and more interesting since the progress will be readily apparent.

October and November will be key in clawing back most if not all the 3 weeks the project is behind. The shops I’m using are historically less busy in November because of Thanksgiving – the Janus parts will have less competition for machine time for ~2 weeks in November.

Thanks for the feedback. You are the 2nd person that preferred the prior look; all feedback on looks is skewed to folks liking the changes in the LE. There were 6 changes to the prior look. Specifically, what ruined it for you? The red dots?

No doubt, the red dot on the Serial Toggle was a big influence. 

Since I had already put the red dot above the adjustment dial, I favored adding the red dots on the Toggle Knob. Industrial Design folks call this Repetition, Pattern & Rhythm meant to unify a look. Adding the oblong shapes in between the numbers on the dial was a further attempt at Repetition & Pattern. 

Before I settled on the LE look, the red dot above the dial, filled laser marked circles in between numbers on the dial & nothing on the Toggle Knob looked and felt like happenstance. When it comes to how a product looks, it is always tough to nail it to everyone's liking.

l wasn't a fan of the red, particularly on the toggle knob itself.  I can't remember all the details right now and haven't seen the pics in a while, but if I recall correctly, I also didn't care for the changes on the dial.  

I'm hoping to pick up one of regular production models when they come out, though.  My wife says I can buy one provided that I pay for it with funds obtained by selling other things that I have acquired/collected over the years (in addition to razors, I also collected fountain pens for a long time).  I have several fairly valuable fountain pens, so I am hoping it will be pretty simple to acquire the funds needed.

Seems somebody hasn't investigated the secondary fountain pen market lately.......
