Shave review of Janus Adjustable razor and Shave Off vs Gillette F4 Toggle

TheHunter I would say on 9 it matched my WR2 1.35 SB with a Feather in it. I know Mark used a Polsilver in his Shave Off with the WR1 .94 which I have as well and in a Shave Off between the 2 Wolfie’s the 1.35 was a bit more efficient than the .94. Again both razors were loaded with Feathers which is my personal blade of choice in all the Wolfman razors I’ve shaved with. So again I’ll say I was a little bit in denial that the Janus on setting 9 could match the 1.35 but I monitored my beard growth for 24 hrs afterwards and both sides remained the same.
The Janus was smoother than the 1.35 Titanium but I have to say that it’s also smooth for a razor that matched and actually came out on top when compared side by side with the Ikon Tech.

I would definitely like to revisit that Shave Off to confirm that the Janus matched the 1.35 and also like to put it up against my .94 with both razors loaded with Feathers.

The Janus on setting 9 was also both more efficient and smoother than the Charcoal Goods Level 3 SB.

I only shaved on setting 4 once and it was extremely smooth and yet deceptively efficient. I can see the razor taking care of different shaving needs for a person like myself who is very Sporadic in how often I shave. Set it on Max when I let my beard go 3-4 days and if I’m only going on a day or two or just doing a night time going out buffing before going out it’s got all my shaving needs covered so in theory you’d only need one razor.  

I’d like to have more time with it so I could really dissect the razor more and compare it to some other razors and I will moving forward I’m sure but at this point right now I’d say it’s in the top 2 or 3 in efficiency of any razor in my den and top 2 in Smoothness when comparing it to any very or extremely efficient razor in my den. As I told Mark I noticed a noticeable drop in efficiency when I used the Polsilver and a bit less using a Kai when comparing the way the Janus shaves with a Feather in it.  If the production model can possibly exceed the prototype in efficiency and still stay as smooth as it is in my humble opinion the razor would be a RAD killer for sure! Well unless I had to have a silver and a black one lol

I’ll sum up my thoughts in saying that any wet shaver that could not get an awesome shave with the Janus razor I’d have to question their technique or as you know some will hate on it and give it bad reviews even if it gave the best shave this side of heaven! Don’t understand hating on a piece of SS that pushes a blade!

I also have to give some props to Eric as a couple of very well respected razor makers said they were very impressed with the Janus and wanted one as soon as they are available.

I have no stakes in this game but this razor is not only unique to look at compared to any other modern razor but it’s really a unique shaving experience as well and I haven’t been as excited about a razor release in a long time. Well the new Titanium High polished Timeless also l has kicked my RAD up a notch or two as well. The pre production model felt perfect in hand and I’m guessing that the smoothness and glide will be up a notch over the current one as well.

Wait, what? A polished timeless ti?

Yep it's on it' way to market and it's a real looker! I was walking by their booth and I saw a light sliver matt razor and at first I thought they had changed the finish on the dark grey Ti but that's another new razor which is going to be Aluminum and when I picked it up I realized it was not Ti and as I was talking to Doug and he looked downward and said is this what you're looking for? There it was a high polished Ti he explained to me it's been in the works for a while and they just have a few finish things to work out but I'll tell you the one they had at the show didn't look like it needed anything! I have always liked the Timeless SS and I've had mine since they were first released and not more than a few months ago I had the pleasure of shaving with the Titanium one and it was even smoother than the SS but man that dark grey dull finish just didn't do it for me so I just stayed with my SS DC but after seeing the new Ti and the way it felt in hand grabbed me right away. The razor for me had what I'd call perfect balance and felth just right in hand. The other thing the partners were saying is they are going to try to make the option only a slight increase in price! I have this funny feeling that that razor is going to fly out the door ! Can't wait to shave with it and do a Shave Off vs the SS.

Dragonsbeard Thank You! This is exactly what I was looking for and more, this information is invaluable for someone like me who hasn’t had the opportunity to Shave with the Janus.

The fact that the Razor is already top tier in efficiency as well as in being smooth compared to your other top Razors says a lot. Eric says the production model will be a touch more efficient at the top end, and you would have elite efficiency along with the smoothness, and you are right, it would be a RAD killer. Excited to see what’s in store!

TheHunter you will get a chance to use it as there will be a pass around in the not so distant future and it will be closer to and maybe even the actual production version.

Things are still chugging along with the Janus Razor. I took some days off from thinking about the Janus Razor. I had been at it for ~2 years. Stepping back for a couple days allowed me to see things with a fresh set of eyes + incorporate the feedback I got from the Maggard meet + revisit this thread that Dragonsbeard started from the beginning.

I had an awesome brainstorming session with the machine shop early last week - pen to paper type stuff without even looking at screens. We are meeting one more time next week to review the design changes I made from the ideas we came up.

And then the machine shop will requote with timelines for each part so that I can put together a legit schedule. Timeline is just as important as the cost. Most of the feedback I got from the Kickstarter project & the Maggard meet was on price and the wait time. Rightfully so we (me + machine shop) are spending lots of time revisiting those two points. I’m working with a small machine shop in Minnesota and turnaround on ‘paperwork’ aka quotes isn’t as fast as it is with the bigger shops. We are working on the prototypes rework plan & the small uber custom batch of ~50. This shop has been awesome to me, I get along well with this creative gang, and we’ve learnt a ton from the prototype run under our belt. I’m super loyal to them for accommodating me on a small initial run of the ~50 & them agreeing on small production runs here and there. Most shops won’t touch a complex project with crazy low volumes. We also share the same values on how we create.

I will share more when I have more details/facts at the end of the week. I owe the Kickstarter supporters who all signed up for the small batch effort an update every month. I will post a brief update here as well. So, at the very least a monthly update as I get the facts and process the info I’m getting.

I'm assuming that ~75% of the Kickstarter backers will purchase, so there should be some available units. We came up with a bunch of ideas on how to make these units uber custom without making things more expensive. The machine shop has to take a second look at the changes, be comfortable with them and give me a thumbs up. When the shop is comfortable, then I have more confidence in what I'm communicating.
