Is steep with the handle more perpendicular to the floor and shallow is more parallel to the floor? Or do I have it backwards?

Assuming a north to south stroke:

Handle to the ceiling=shallow blade angle

Handle to the floor=steep blade angle

Exactly! another point of reference would be the handle: Handle Closer to the face, steeper angle. Handle farther from the face, shallower angle.

The H2 and R41 (both 2011 and 2013) are two of my three favorite DE shaves. Close and long-lasting. I don't use a steep angle with any of them.

The third is the only razor I use with a steep angle: the Ikon Shavecraft Tech. In fact, I tried using it with a moderate angle for weeks, but couldn't avoid the blood. I switched to the steep angle after davidsilva suggested it, and now the Ikon Tech is my closest and most interesting shave.

Forgive my probably stupid question, but regarding the angle - what do you mean "I'm using a steep/shallow angle"? When finding a razor's angle, it's basically the angle where it cuts. You don't have much variance on that, as it turns from not-cutting on the shallower end and scraping on the other. What am I missing?

Many razors have a range of effective angles. The more aggressive the razor is in terms of blade exposure, the wider this range of effective angle becomes. Razors like the R41 are very aggressive, meaning they have a lot of blade exposure, which gives the user a wider range of effective angles to choose for a comfortable shave.

Very mild razors like the Seygus, Feather AS-D2, and Merkur 33c all have very low blade exposure and thus a very narrow range of effective cutting angles. Tshese razors only work within a specific grade of cutting angle.

I use a steep angle on both my H2 and my R41 and I agree with you that I get the best BBS shaves with them as such.

My only other razor that can go toe-to-toe with either the H2 or R41 is my trusty Micromatic OC and it too has a slightly more steep than usual sweet spot.

One caveat that I do find is that blade selection does seem to make a difference for me when using a steep angle in my DEs. For me, most uncoated blades don't take nicely to a steep angle.

I have shaved these past 5 days with the Above the Tie H2, utilizing steep angle (really really steep) and it has gotten me the best shaves of my life (specially on the neck). It really feels like shaving with training wheels (almost like cheating), but It gives the easiest BBS on the neck that you can imagine.

Of course this has now triggered my aquisition disorder up a notch and now I would like to know which other razors also have this Steep angle affair. As of now I have the following razors on my buy list due to reading they also love steep angle:

Muhle R41
ATT H1

Question: Any users of the H1, H2 or R41 also love steep angle shaving with them?

The H2 has now replaced my beloved R1, as my primary and daily razor. Same BBS, but even easier.

I'm an R41 user and I'm alittle surprised or maybe I misunderstand but my angle is almost 0 with no pressure at all. The angle is so flat you could actually sit a coin on the top cap doing my first vertical pass (sideburn to the jawline). I do angle slightly with my horizontal passes but it is still steep. and it is a BBS shave every time.

Ok...I think we are all on the same page after re-reading the posts. Yes I have a very steep angle!

What you're describing is a steep angle. We are referring to the angle between the blade and the skin. With the top cap horizontal you have a large angle between the blade and skin.

Thanks for that, it took alittle while to sink in, no clue why, been a long day! Steep it is.

I'm exclusively a devette* shaver, and always use a steep angle. To me it's the most natural angle for an "aggressive" razor.

---
* Devette = DE razor without base plate, or with hex nut in place of base plate, or narrow base plate that provides total blade exposure -- a la the now unavailable Barbe Bleue Model X a/k/a BBX. With practice, it's a piece of cake, despite its "scary" reputation.
