The RR is known to be a mild razor. I recently tried a Schick P-30 in the Hawk after reading some positive feedback and I was disappointed to say the least. Very mild. The Captain Kai mild or Feather Pro is my to go blade in the Hawk.

As time progressed in my SE adventure and my technique improved I went looking for more aggressive SE razors. I have been enjoying the ATT SE1 and Asylum RX. The SS Mongoose is nice too but I find it way to heavy.

It got me thinking how to get the Hawk more aggressive. The only way would be to widen the blade gap. I measured the initial blade gap of the Hawk to be around .43mm. Then it hit me. I took an old worn Kai blade (.25mm) and ground away the cutting edge and narrowed it down. Basically I made a shim. I loaded up the Schick P-30 with the new shim, tightened my handle and measured the blade gap to be .68mm. In comparison the ATT SE1/2 measures 0.61mm. Took a shower, lathered up and had an amazing BBS shave. It's night and day difference. It's very close to the Asylum RX. Now I can enjoy my Hawk once again with a simple and cheap fix.

See I have the V1 in SS and I'm extremely impressed how good it shaves no matter if I use Schick, Kai or Feather blades. My very first AC razor and while its on the mild side any of the AC blades are extremely sharp that the outcome is always BBS with zero irritation, but then I enjoy shaving with the super mild Mamba to all the way with Futur on highest setting, or Fatip or MMOC or just some medium aggressive razor. To me aggressiveness don't matter, but the blade performance it does

Great post, @"KingCobra"! I’ve often wondered about shimming an Artist Club razor, but this is the first time I have heard someone actually do it. I don’t think I have the tools to follow your example (I’m guessing that in a match of scissors vs. AC blade, the blade will win), but at least I know it can be done. Smile

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

You can always swing by the shop and I can make you one.

The shim photograph is with the first post of the thread. It's just a blade without the sharp edge, to increase the blade gap.

That is a generous offer, and I appreciate it! I have a fairly new SE I’m still getting used to (Above the Tie Calypso SE1), but if I eventually feel like it could use a little more oomph, I’ll definitely have your offer in mind.

Word of warning to anyone thinking of taking a pair of scissors and attempting this with a blade, don't. I lost a nice pair of scissors, (thankfully that was it) Smile

What Davin said. Unless you have the right tools don't even think of trying. Those razor blades are hardened and you can severely hurt yourself with just a simple slip of the blade.

I would also add that once a piece of the blade has been snipped clear: it is very sharp, can fly a long way, and do plenty plenty of damage for it's size! At the very least, please wear eye protection.
