But many want to reply to a post WITH a QUOTED reply. And if that post has a string of 20 quoted replies in it, they all get quoted...instead of just the one you are trying to reply with quotes to.

TSN is the same. B&B only quotes the current post (how I think it should be). So with this post, if someone quotes ME, they get the "leefish" quote as well which may have nothing to do with their reply.

Often just hitting the "reply" is all that is necessary, but with no time limit on deleting or editing a post, someone could reply to my post like this:

Bruce: I think I'm going to PIF all my M&F Brushes to DFS members
MEMBER: Great Idea Bruce
a week later, I change my post to read:
Bruce: TSN should ban "leefish, Freddy and Andrewjs18".

Then how does that members reply look?

I've had it happen to me and always make sure to quote the post I am referring too so there is no denying what was said.

Yes, that's what should be done, but many are not aware how to edit out the unwanted/unnecessary content and many more just don't bother.

You got it! Members come in all shades of 'board savvyness' [sic].

Well, it's never going to be perfect but some streamlining is definitely in order. Perhaps a combination of leefish and andrewjs18. That is, do away with Reply (we already have Quick Reply and can easily open a full editor when needed), have only Quote, and limit the quotes allowed. Then, in Announcements, we let everyone know of the changes and the reason for them.

@Bruce - TSN and DFS both use the same software, MyBB. Badger and Blade, last time I looked, are using VBulletin.

VBulletin is paid software, it isnt cheap and is notorious for bleeding the forum owners dry. These are some of the current packages : http://www.vbulletin.com/en/purchases

So, for the foreseeable future, we will be using MyBB. Andrew can indeed restrict the number of nested quotes, and I await his decision on what he wants to do with the reply button.

I guess we could try setting the quote nesting to 1 and possibly remove the reply button, or try 1 thing at a time to come to a better balance.

for what it's worth, I won't be moving to any paid forum software - vbulletin, xenforo, invision board, etc...I don't want to deal with the license fee overhead.

Andrew, as a compromise, may I suggest the quote nesting at 3.  Otherwise, the purpose of the quote button is lost.  This way it can be used as a Reply button (one quote) or a Quote button (more than one quote).  Just my 2¢.

Also, leefish and you know the ins and outs of the various forum software options but you seem to have MyBB working just fine so what does pay software offer that would make it so compelling?

Interesting. Sort of like open source vs. non open source.

I'm pretty sure that's the biggest thing. mybb is open source and free to be modified by anyone. that said though, being that mybb is free and open source, its development relies entirely on volunteers donating their time. I've been using mybb since version 1.2, so it's been around for quite some time.

quote nesting adjusted to 3. I believe this will only affect newly quoted posts after the change was made.
