Product ingredient topic

Just a general topic on product ingredients.

I’ve seen a few comments on YouTube shaver channels about certain ingredients.
Some guys are not too keen on ingredients like dimethicone for an example.

Some comments I see, say they prefer soaps without a cosmetic type ingredients.

I personally don’t mind as long as the product performs well, and also the fact that some of these ingredients have cosmetic type names yet they are derived from natural sources.

What are your thoughts regarding these type of ingredients in shave products.

If anyone has done the research or knows where you can find it, I'd like to see a list of all the ingredients used, common alternate names, source and why its in the product - ie, what does it do?  There should be (probably is) a Manufacturers Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for personal care products.

This should be a good thread, subscribed to it.

We are laser focused on ingredients - what it does, why it is added, the synergy with other ingredients and so on.  Chiming with what Marko said,  our suppliers provide us with documentation on ingredients - Safety Data Sheets, Certificate of Analysis, certifications for Kosher, Halal, Vegan etc. For cosmetic ingredients we also get marketing and technical literature, usage levels, before after pics, graphs charts and so on.

Please feel free to ask about any specific ingredient and if it is there in our repository I can shed some light on the ingredient deck.  Happy to share the info.

One ingredient that I've been confused about is Boric acid/Borax. It seems like a cleaning type of ingredient but some commerical options seems to have it. i.e. Lea.

Also, Lanolin. It's popular with MWF and many other artisan options but I've heard both sides to it. Personally I enjoy soaps with lanolin and usually it's a good sign for me but I've heard that it doesn't help with slickness and does the opposite. Interested in hearing other opinions on it.

In a cosmetic, boric acid would be a preservative.
Regarding Lanolin, don't start the Lanolin wars again.
I personally don't see benefit to lanolin in soap. It's an emollient.

Boric Acid is used as a pH adjuster or a preservative. Not sure if Boric Acid adds anything to the lathering properties.

Re: lanonlin, it provides the emollient properties. From a raw material perspective, raw lanolin comes with high pesticide levels. There will be lot of pesticides accumulated over a period of time and there will be some residue of the pesticides in the lanolin.  Lower the pesticide levels is always good as we don't want any smidgen of pesticides in our faces.

So in shaving soap there's probably very small amounts of boric acid?

I've used the Løthur soaps that contain Dimethicone before; occlusives and silicones can gather at the base of the knot, according to what I've read.
Don't let this put you off, they are amazing soaps and well worth trying, I simply made sure to extra thoroughly wash my brush after shaving to ensure that absolutely no soap residue remained in the knot.

I usually wash my brushes out with antibacterial soap once a week anyway.

I think dimethicone is a great ingredient and makes the skin feel good post shave.
