I completely get it. I have a strong appreciation for quality and crafted goods in general. I am also inquisitive and very much like to experience different things. Being the case, I likely have more razors than I need. In fact I am sure I do as I have more than (1).

I do like and use all that I have (can't think of one I don't of the top of my head) but it isn't tied to cost but more aesthetic. One of my favorite razors in fact is a $20 nickel Fatip Grande. Love it. Not the prettiest but has a look and feel that I like and it offers consistently good shaves.

I have toyed with a No Buy period of time but honestly there are so many great things hitting the market, not sure I could resist.

I've said it elsewhere and people took offense, but I don't mind saying it again as I truly believe it....if there was no outlet to post pics of SOTD and new acquisitions, most of us wouldn't own 80% of our shave gear.

All evidence has been buried. All tapes have been erased.

I don't completely disagree but speaking for myself, my acquisition(s) really aren't related to sharing in the SOTD but are definitely indirectly motivated by SOTD and forum content in general.

I see or read about some new project and end up purchasing. If I weren't on the forums, I wouldn't see the latest shiny thing and consequently would have less "stuff" as a result.

Yep! Its all about "keeping up with the Jones'" as they say right? I'm very guilty of it myself...

I agree with Kevin and Bruce. Having said that, after 30+ years shaving, impressing people that I don't even know is not on my radar. Most of the items I own were already mine before forums like this one were even thought out.

Like Kevin, most of the new things I have purchased is because of the forum exposure.

I may follow Bruce's advice and quit posting SOTD, the last thing I want is to come across as a show off.

A properly machined razor will last a lifetime or more, if properly cared for. Zinc alloy razors probably won't be they can. The old brass Gillette are great but usually need a new coating after a while.

I shave with $10 razors and $300 razors and usually end up with a happy great shave... if you can't justify the price of a machined razor, simply don't buy it, or if you already taken the plunge, sell it.

I'd also mention cracked handles. old gillettes are notorious for cracked/split handles.

I'm not lobbying to get SOTD stopped or pointing the finger at anyone here. To be completely honest, I don't look at most of those threads. On some other forums, you can clearly see who is in it to "show off" and who is sharing genuine pics.

Many who post SOTD are doing it for fun, enjoy the photogrpahy and want to share beautiful gear. But there are definitely some who post pics of goods for the "ooooo and ahhhh" they receive.

It is just a personal observation and many don't see it my way.

I like looking at the SOTD pics myself. Cool to see the gear and enjoy the combos that people use.

Lately I have only posted pics using my cell phone but have decided that it is much more convenient and I want to keep tinkering with it to see if I can get some decent images. Fun for me as a project of sorts but more related to my personal enjoyment than anything else.

hrfdez I like and enjoy seeing your pics too as you have some killer gear. Not perceived as showing off from my perspective, more interesting to see what's on tap.

I didn't even know there was a SOTD thread here. Guess I don't venture around this site enough lol. I like the photography aspect of it though. Speaking of modern razors I just shaved with my Phoenix Double Open Comb. It's a take on the antique Grand Shave King. I get a BBS shave out of that thing every time without even trying, and it was only $35.

Everyone has a happy place with their gear, but to find that happy place you need something to compare it to. There is never a need to buy anything more than the basics, but a lot of people enjoy being able to say they have tried this or that or be able to compare workmanship or shave quality. If you get no different experience or final result from the shave -and collecting or talking about equipment you've tried provides no value to you, then you've probably found a good place to stop. I personally get as good a quality shave from my Slim as I do from my ATT, BUT I do enjoy owning both and being able to talk about both so I regret nothing.
