I am always baffled by "pre-shave oils".  We are supposed to wash our faces to get rid of dirt and oils for shaving ..... and then put a thick oil back on?  Ummm ... no.  I also find highly aggressive razors to be more of an "I'm a real man" game as opposed to actually shaving properly.  I've never been into the whole "if you get the angle just right, you get a great and fast shave" idea.  

What's not over-rated to me is a dual head razor.  When not using a straight, I almost always use a dual head.  OC side for first pass to mow most everything down, and polish up with the closed comb side.

Excellent post.  I feel the same way about so called "aggressive" razors. I have never understood the concept of using a razor that is going to leave me with a tomato face.  To each it's own of course.  Maybe is the fact that I used a Super Speed for most of my adult life.

Dual Heads?  We think alike. I even use my OC razors for a two day growth and that's it.

Yeah I mentioned this in my original post way back at the beginning of this thread, but more and more I'm thinking aggressive razors really just afford more cutting angles, including a whole range which, yes, cut whiskers, but at the cost of scraping, irritation, and quicker dulling of the blade. So then guys "master" these razors by finding a better, more reasonable angle with them, which turns out to be the optimal angle created by good "mild" razors, which, it turns out, are very effective at cutting whiskers, especially when fitted with a good sharp blade.

For me, pre-shave oils increase razor drag and seem to put a damper on the lather. Even just a couple of drops. I know some who swear by pre-shave oils, but they just seem to hinder, not help my shave. This one really is a YMMV thing for me.

After reading so many "anti" pre-shave oil comments I have to wonder if it comes down to more than the use of oil.  Perhaps it has more to do with the type of oil, the amount used, our individual beard and skin types, the shaving soap or cream, or even the brush.  Perhaps it's just our perception of what is needed for a good shave.  In any event, I find a good pre-shave oil just helps smooth out my shaves.  As always, there is no right or wrong to this; it's what works for the individual.

This is precisely why I enjoy topics lilke this, and why I was compelled to steal the idea, and start this topic here. It is really great to see all the things that work for some, don't work for others, or fall somewhere in the middle with a healthy dose of "meh"...

When I started this little adventure just over a year and a half ago, I was told over and over to try oil.  I bought several different kinds and even mixed my own.  I hope I didn't come off as too negative.  This was one thing that I know many people swear by and I just couldn't make it work no matter how hard I tried.(or how many I bought! )    I'm glad it works for you, Freddy! I know, YMMV!
