**UPDATE** - Sorry i'm a little late but ended up going with the Merkur 37c Slant. Really happy with it. Thanks for all your input gentlemen!

Hey Gents,

I'm thinking of finally getting my first open comb or slant razor for use when I end up growing my beard out over 2 weeks.
I don't want something crazy aggressive, just efficient. Can't decide between an open comb or slant. Any suggestions between two and any specific recommendations?

Thanks!

For lining or edging a beard I think OC would be the way to go.

I held off on OC razors for a VERY long time as I had been conditioned early on to fear them by the community. Now I love them and have a number in all stripes.

A great value IMHO is the RR Rake. Solid head and a SS Bamboo handle for $40 is a crazy deal. There is another RR OC [same head] with a different SS handle for $30. I don't have this but the head is a good shaver.

Fatip represents another, slightly more aggressive shaver that is a great bargain and one of my favorites as well. I like the Grande personally.

If you want the best of both worlds, the iKon 101 is solid and on the milder side. I actually feel the SB side is slightly more efficient. You can get the head alone if you have handle(s) and will run you $40-45.

Good luck!

Maggards sells an open comb that isn't too shabby for under $30. It's mild but still gives a decent shave, and it's comfortable to use. I got a smooth irritation free shave with mine on Sunday. I had it loaded up with a Derby Extra, and my MR-8 handle screwed on. The Soap Commander Purpose SS with 6 drops of Glycerine probably also helped. I gotta agree with kwsher, for $40 the RR Rake is a heck of a deal. I want to get a Parker 26c for the head so I can try it on my MR-8, and MR-22 handles.

Just ordered an OC head and a puck of the new Col. Conk natural line shaving soap. The OC head is made by the Pearl Razor Company, and is made in India. It looks like a Parker 26C head. I shall see once it get's here, the Company seems pretty straight forward. Been around since 1990, and they sell through various vendors online.

Parker 26C. Ideal for removing a 2 week beard. And affordable.

I have a Merkur Slant Blade (No model I.D.) It is a big disappointment.
My Parker 91R regular straight head is far superior.

My old GEM Micromatic Open Comb ($10 on eBay) consistently gives me a better shave than any of my other razors with the exception of a properly honed Rolls Razor.

Hi Clayton, look forward to your thoughts. Although I don't have specific confirmation, it is my understanding that the Rake uses the same Parker head. It delivers a nice, efficient shave IMHO and I enjoy using it.

Hope that you enjoy chevyguy!

Shaven in the Past
I started with a 37C and it's a fine shaver. I just recently bought a Lutz double slant and wow. What a smooth shave. Would recommend this baby.

IMO a slant is not necessary. You can achieve the same results by angling your razor head. YMMV, etc. I know a lot of shavers swear by them, this is just my view. I say go with the Open Comb.

I think I read somewhere that the Cadet, Pearl, RazoRock and PAA open combs are all the same. I have the PAA Symmetry head and it delivers a great shave, but not for everyday use, for me. I'll use it if I have 3+ days of growth.
