I tried it, its OK. It tastes less like root beer the second drink you have. To note the beer is really sweet, and has a black licorice finish, exactly like the taste of jagermeister.
The next beer you should try is the coney island hard root beer. This tastes more like an actual root beer, and its not as sweet as the not your father's. The coney island may make a better float.

I'll have to try the Coney Island one. I'll drink the not your father's rootbeer, but only 1..can't handle the sweetness after that.
give me a wheat beer and we're good!

Beer over ice cream! That is sacrilegious!!!!!
There is an specialty ice cream shop here in Wake Forest that puts beer IN the ice cream....They blend White Street Stout into the ice cream and man is it delicious! The also have Bacon and Bourbon, Black and White (Whisky ice cream with chocolate chips), and whiskey and clover flavors too!

Amy's Ice Cream here in Austin has a Shiner Bock ice cream that is also tasty!
I agree that the NYFRB is sweet; I still have one left from the 6-pack in fact. Sure is tasty on a hot day but definitely one and done.

Whisky or whiskey and ice cream, yes. Beer and ice cream, blech! (Can you tell I'm a whisky, whiskey, brandy, or red wine drinker if I have an alcoholic beverage? )

I can't drink beer with hops (shuts down the waterworks) even though I love it, but I bet I'll be able to drink this beer! I'm in and the first place I called has both of them. I'll try it.
BTW, I don't know about whiskey and ice cream, but bourbon, rum, and scotch all make a nice highball with milk. My neighbor and I would sit out with our glasses of milk and he thought it very humorous, "Here's 2 gentlemen sitting out on the deck enjoying a glass of milk.", he'd say as he laughed.
Edit:
OK, so we did a side by each taste test. Both are sweet like soda. The wife thought the Coney Island was the sweetest and I couldn't decide; they were both sweet. I found the not your fathers to be "creamier" tasting, definitely root beer but somewhat masked in flavor. The Coney Island was a harsher and more of an in your face sort of root beer. I wouldn't turn my nose up at either one; they were both good. But if I had to choose the one I prefer it would be the Coney Island. I said nothing and the wife also chose the Coney Island as her winner. But like me she liked them both.
Now I'll see if they turn off the waterworks. (Oh, the joys of older age!)
Edit: Absolutely no plumbing problems! They're keepers.
One thing I forgot, they're basically adult soda, so one is enough.
