Hi to all. My first DE razor was Bluebeards Revenge scimitar and want to go to next step. As a newbie I have been looking on the forum, reviews on websites as to my next choice of razor. I was wondering what your first razor was and how long it took you too go to the next step & what razor did you choose and what influenced you buy them. Cheers

My first DE razor was the same as yours (although I think its now called a Dreadnought Spartan).  After two months of focusing on blade angle, grain patterns, and technique I got a slant (37c) and I loved it.  I got it because I heard how efficient they were and I was not disappointed.

Can you clarify what you mean by next step?  I assume you are talking about aggressiveness>? If that's the case these razors are all pretty aggressive. Starting with the least aggressive on this list and moving to most aggressive (Parker Hefty is still a pretty aggressive razor however) Of course this excludes Slants as I think they are a different discussion and shaver entirely.

My first razor was an Edwin Jager DE89. Loved this razor but wanted something a little more aggressive. I had read about shimming but was really just wanting to buy another razor so I picked up the Razorock Slab. This was a definite step up in aggression and worked out great only it wasn't my last purchase......

My first razor was a Weishi DE. I then started with the vintage Gillettes such as Old Type, NEW, Slim Adjustable, Superspeed Red Tip, Lady Gillette, and others. I now have others but all of those Gillettes still remain in my rotation.

My first DE razor was a Merkur 23C which I have into rotation with my second razor, a Parker 26C. I was looking for an open comb as my second razor and John's (The Mad Scientist of Wet Shaving) video review of the Parker was what convinced me in buying it. The Parker is more aggressive than the Merkur and gives a closer shave. I am very happy with both razor and they get equal use.

I started with a Feather Popular and upgraded to a 37c after about a month.

Hi Huck4food, In U.K. Its still called Bluebeards Revenge , shame as I prefer the name Dreadnought Spartan its sounds much cooler. I have looked at slanted razors, I like what I have read about them.
Hi Steeleshave, I'm not just talking about aggression but about it all wether you liked the design, style, quality, weight, functionality, price anything that made you decide it was time to upgrade or change your razor.

My first razor was a GEM Featherweight, from there, after I'd nailed down technique I went to a Gillette black handle Superspeed. From there a Slim and worked my way up to magical #9. I have no idea where I went to after that, but all of the DE and SE razors were open to me. After the Slim I went on a feeding frenzy and decided that I liked pre-1921 Gillettes and the Muhle R41s in DE and lots of SE razors, too many of those to list. Those are the ones in my shave cabinet today, all the rest are in long term storage.

I do believe that everyone owes it to themselves to enter the world of vintage Gillettes at some point. I'd look for a Gillette New OC for a next step. Although once you start down this path, be aware, it's likely a slippery slope. One razor is one razor, two razors... Well they are like rabbits.

One rabbit and you have one rabbit as long as that rabbit lives.

Two rabbits and soon you have 20 rabbits.

Not sure why it works that way with razors, because I get the rabbit issue. Smile
