New user!! Help me help my roommate!!

My roommate is just out of the marine corps. We are both attending MMI in the Harley program and I’m looking for a starter set to get him going. He has test driven some of my stuff and liked it. Looking for brush, bowl for soap, razor and blades. Was gonna go get the starter set from cvs but thought I’d ask around here

I was going to suggest the same. I started with a Maggard kit 3 years ago and never looked back!

I wouldn't get him a starter set. I would get him a nice user grade 40s SS, an Omega S Brush, some GSBs and a puck of Schafmilch. Can be done for under $40.

Further to my post above with the new shaver pamphlet link, if I were starting out today I would get a Rockwell 6s and never need another razor. You can learn on plates 1 and 2 and refine your technique on plates 3 and 4 then when you're up for the challenge go for it with plates 5 and 6. That said, a cheaper option is an Edwin Jager DE-89 or a razor with the same head. For brush I'd go with a nice semogue boar for economy and or maybe a RazoRock Snowman synthetic. Keeping the brush price to $20 is a good way to learn without blowing the budget. A blade sampler pack so he can try a variety of blades and for soap, there are so many great soaps but on a pure what a nice soap basis I'd say you couldn't go wrong with a tub B&M Seville.

Do him a favor and stay away from the drug store shave aisle. Try Italian Barber, Maggards or West coast shaving. Theres many more thats just the few I've shopped at.

Why not get him the brush, razor, etc. that he has used and likes? That would be a known good setup. If that is not feasible, then the following should work well:

Omega boar brush
Edwin Jagger DE89 razor
Blade sampler pack
Kiss My Face shaving cream or Van Der Hagen soap
Nivea Sensitive Post Shave Balm

The above are good and affordable, and so a great way to start out. Amazon, Maggard Razors, Shoebox Shaveshop, Italian Barber, Connaught Shaving are really good for ordering online. Gemstone Trading and especially Try A Blade are great sources for blades. CVS is pretty good for some things, but have a limited selection compared to online.

Good advice - crappy products make for a crappy shave. That said, there is nothing wrong with the Proraso shave cream or a tube of Nivea Sensitive shave cream that you will probably see in your drug store shave aisle. Both will provide a really nice, cushiony lather.

Also, if you go with a boar brush, remember to have him soak it for 10 minutes or so in warm water before use and also tell him to be aware that it will improve as it breaks in.
