Believe that's a different lavender, this one a re-creation of Czech & Speake Oxford and Cambridge (vs the original, which was a re-creation of Gendarme 20). @"uncle_dubya" has tried it, I think. He can probably give you a rundown.

I'm not a frag head like some of you, but correct me if I'm wrong; is all of Mr. Fine products re-creations of larger scent house fragrances with only his name applied to each scent? Snake Bite being the sole exception as it is a pure menthol blend.

For example, I read that Barbasol foam was based on a cologne frag, and American Blend Fine was based on the Barbasol frag.

To say it another way, his offerings are not original designs or creations, but recycled scents with new names. Would this be a correct (but oversimplified) statement?

That's correct, though you actually have the progression of American Blend reversed. The structure of YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme was based on the original fragrance for Barbasol, and Fine American Blend is a re-creation of Rive Gauche.

Otherwise, yes, that's very much the case.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? Is that how the saying goes?

check it out, RoosterClover, i'll copy + paste my thoughts from my first use yesterday:

the aftershave smells a lot more like the fragrance it's knocking off when it's splashed on rather than out of the bottle. i'll be honest, i was pretty disappointed upon initial sniff, but it redeemed itself after a full on application. one thing i'd forgotten about, though, was how unkind to the skin fine is after spoiling myself with alcohol splashes from mickey lee soapworks, barrister + mann and chatillon lux.

Third, I bought some and though immediately - YES, this is exactly what I remember from back in the day what a barbershop or shaving was supposed to smell like. I had read it was an emulation/"inspired"/or whatever its called from some  YSL thing (zoom, right over my head). The better half smelled it and also thought - Yes, this is how shaving is supposed to smell.

OK cool, I like it, and it reminds me of what shaving used to be and not all this new stuff and endless variations of scents.

Also, trademark infringement. And Rive Gauche is actually somewhat more complicated than the scent of Barbasol. To be honest, I don't care for the geranium in the construct and never have, but I know that it's very popular. The fragrance used to be far cheaper, but YSL recently reformulated it and cranked up the price.

To be fair to YSL, it was not something that had been captured in perfume form before. In many respects, they made it a classic PERFUME, though the general idea had been around for quite some time.
