Hector Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, Op.14

There's a somewhat interesting backstory here. Berlioz fell in love with an Irish actress, Harriet Smithson, when he saw her perform as Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet in 1825, when he was 22. He pursued her, writing numerous love letters that were never answered, and she refused to meet him. In 1830 he wrote the Symphonie Fantastique to express his love for her. She heard about this, and a couple years later she heard it performed and was so impressed that she agreed to see him. And in 1832 they were married - after which they were increasingly unhappy and bitter, finally splitting up. Oh well.
