Mongoose Tips

I got a stainless steel Mongoose and it's brutal. I tried Kai Captain, Mild, Feather Pro and I am getting lots of razor burn. What am I doing wrong?

This is the first razor to beat me up like this. I know lots of folks are crazy for the goose so I must be missing something.

Any advice is welcome...

I found mine much nicer with a lighter handle. It was eating me up with the bomber handle.

Yeah, I've definitely found that the stainless Mongooses (though I rather like the term "mongeese") are NOT to my taste. Too heavy. But the Alumigoose, if you can find one, shaves absolutely beautifully. I mentioned to them that titanium might be the best material of all, and was told that we might see something like that in the distant future, so I can only hope. The design seems to shave much better with lesser weight, though.

I agree that with the Stainless head and the Bomber handle, it's a heavy beast.

Here are a few things that might help.

One, a very, very light pressure. Almost feel like you're trying to cut through 1/2 the length of the whiskers.

Two, experiment with the angle. Perhaps start with the flat part of the head against the skin and use that as as starting point. If that's too harsh, try making the angle more shallow (the handle more parallel to the floor) and see if that helps. For some, a steeper angle (handle more perpendicular to the floor) works better, as counterintuitive as that may sound.

Finally, start with one or two passes with the Mongoose, and do the 3rd pass and any touchup with a very mild DE razor. Very often that 3rd pass is just too much without some kind of fortification of the shaving mix even with good razor technique.

I didn't get along with the Mongoose.

It kept slicing me under my nose something fierce. I never did figure it out.

Short strokes & find the most efficient angle for your face.

How do you handle other SEs? What about aggressive DEs? If these don't work well for you then the AC type razors may not be a good match for you.

If this razor requires THIS much attention just move to using a straight lol.

Lots of good advice here already. I would also recommend using the lightest handle you can find, because the razor head on the stainless Mongoose is a real sledgehammer.

Also, if you make the first pass especially light, and just focus on beard reduction with short strokes, hopefully that will pave the way for a more comfortable second pass. (I’ve never even attempted — nor needed — a third pass with my Mongoose.)

Excellent advice everyone. I do own, and love, the General by Colonial Razors. I also own a variety of double edge razors from Wolfman to Super Adjustables.

I wanted the alumigoose but they were out of stock. The folks at Mongoose said they have to wait for the manufacturer to have an opening in their schedule again to make more.

So new handle, new angle, new razor in aluminium once it's released, got it!
