my biggest complaint about Mike's soap is its availability. each time I'd randomly visit his site to see what he had, he was out of stock of pretty much everything. now that I'm following his store on facebook, I get alerts when he posts new soap availability for pre-orders, etc..

You're correct Andrew. It is nice to have an idea of the production schedule, eliminates a lot of angst with an understandably frustrating problem.

...yes, I get his Twitter updates on the iPhone lock screenso when he updates just order and forget about it until that golden nugget hits the mailbox!

Also for Optometrist if there are any forum members with an APO/FPO mailbox...might work?

Are the tins comparable to CRSW Select in size and quality ?

I don't know of a retailer.
The tins are about the same size as CRSW but thinner and not as high quality.

I just got from the B&M thread where I was kind of frustrated over how fast 42 sold out and the shops that did have had no direct shipping to Denmark.

All of a sudden I remember why I don't own any Mike's Natural.

They were never in stock, and I buy my soaps in bulk, and I see now shipping to Denmark is $36 plus tax and customs, which would bring the price up over Nuavua territory and with a thin tin (CRSW tins are the thinnest I like to go with), shipping half across the world and inspection by careless custom guys = Mike's Natural are just not for my den

Having to turn on Twitter alerts, which I don't use and Facebook alerts, which I luckily also don't use, to get a shaving soap, let's just say that Mike's don't need me as a customer and I don't need Mike's Natural soap.

Your win, my loss. But then again not such a big loss really with so much equally great better packaged easily available shaving soaps out there......
Cheers, Claus from Denmark

at least Mike has always been honest and upfront to state that soap making is a side thing for him. last I remember, he was in school for his PhD.

Here is a fun little pictorial display of the quality of the lather that Mike's builds.  Check it out as I zoom in on the lather.  Minimal, and very fine air bubbles in this lather.

And then one glamour shot of the brush that made the lather.

Geez Nathan, that brush and lather is too much! Lovely lather, Mike's Hungarian Lavender is a soap I will never be without.

Nathan - as always STELLAR lather - beautiful!

As to the "Mike's is always out of stock problem" - let's face it: most of us have more soaps than...(just fill in the blanks for yourself) - so I'd rather have quality soap like Mike's, where you have to be a bit organised to get scents you want, than soaps that are always in stock and of lower standard.

Of course in an ideal world, we would have access to the whole Mike's range 24/7 - but I for one am just grateful he makes such a quality soap so consistently. Please don't forget, this is only a side project for him and he does have a day job.

Actually I just checked his site and there are currently 6 scents + his unscented shave soap in stock/ready to order - that's 50% I believe - so if you buy a tin/bar of each, that's ~12 months worth of soaps - hardly a reason to complain?

It's not fair to say that soaps that are always in stock are of a lower standard. Many of most of the soaps that are always in stock are made by soap makers that have a full time soap business, whereas Mike's is a part time business, or merely a side job as you mentioned. I finally tried Mike's and agree that it is a great soap and some of the scents are really nice too, but they are not the best soaps I own.
