I've yet to get in some Saponificio Varesino ... next order with my pal over in Leeds, I'll get some in.
I have to say, MDC did not impress me. I've had both the Fougere and the Original, used both on a number of occasions and always found a lather to equal any other soap which doesn't make it better or worse as I think pretty much all soaps are within a very narrow band unless there is a genuine leap forward in terms of formulation to differentiate it from the bazaar. Good lather, good scent, irritable shave, claggy post-shave feeling.
MDC is good, certainly as good as a whole host of names I could pull from memory, but not all that ... and not different, as per pretty much everything else out there.
My hope for Saponificio Varesino is that it is genuinely a leap beyond the melee.

At the time MdC was being highly touted it was very good and there was little that could touch it. But the soap field has changed drastically in the very short time since MdC was heralded.
MdC is still quite good if one wants a naturally scented soap. Not everyone can appreciate that or wants to pay for it. Too, not everyone wanted to treat it like a fine wine and allow it to age so as to get really good. MdC after a few years to age is very nice indeed.
I still enjoy MdC , but other naturally scented soaps have taken center stage for me (my own) and MdC while still being quite good just doesn't see much use by myself anymore. But MdC gets more % use than any of the other soaps, other than mine, that are in my cabinet.

Brian. Lover of SE razors.
The biggest bonus for me with the Saponificio Varesino was the post shave. Outstanding. The wooden soap container is also a touch of class
Just pulled the plug on there 70th edition soap in jazzy new metal container. A little pricey but worth a punt.Purchased direct from source.
I'll let you know what I think once it arrives

I found your post because I was researching on those two makers. They are to this day my two favorite soap makers and I can't ever decide which one is my favorite.
Comparing the MDC fougère with the SV Felce Aromatica is next on my shaving "to do" list. Should be interesting.
I'm glad I don't have to choose only one. Both are outstanding and the post shave incomparable.
