But this year we decided to get these two portable AC units, which arrived today and will go in the bedroom and office that bracket our living room, hopefully cooling the whole space a bit.

A few years back (just in the nick of time, it turned out) we had our oil-fired furnace replace by a geothermal heating system. More properly, it's a "ground source heat pump". They drilled a hole for the pipework three hundred feet straight down (ruining mny back yard lawn), where it's a year-round average of something like +9°C (+48.2°F) in my area. The winter heating is far cheaper than oil, but we also get the added benefit of central AC in the summer. Since it's ground sourced (+9°, remember) it's way cheaper to run for AC than an above-ground conventional heat pump trying to dump heat into, say, +30°C air.

The only thing is, in order to keep the upstairs cool in the evenings (remote sensors), the downstairs gets chilly enough that sometimes I have to put on a hoodie. Not that I'm complaining.

Interesting, John. Thanks for the note. We discovered that running both AC units at the same time trips our breaker switches. So we probably will try using one in the living room instead of the office to see if both can be on. If not, I guess we'll have to alternate their use, living room or office in the daytime and bedroom at night.

Not that I want to drag out this thread hijack much further, but maybe a pair of those timers (like for plant or aquarium lighting), one set to run during odd-numbered hours, the other set to even-numbered hours, would do the job.
