Is this cheating?

I needed a quick and easy shave this morning and got a Damn Fine Shave, actually near BBS with the La Faulx Classic.  So, is an aerosol can cheating?  I will say that I also used Black Jack Beard Lube as a pre-shave, which adds to the slickness for me.

You didn't cheat, next time apply the foam with one of your brushes. You could even warm up the foam in your scuttle if you have one.

I use my White Proraso can when I'm in a hurry and need to be cleaned up.

I know it’s almost sacrilege on the forums but I’ve been using Gillette Labs shave gel a lot here recently with great results. I’d love to try out the Prorasso canned goo. The Labs is around $8 per can but I’ve found it for $4-5 at times if you buy 4-5 cans at a time.

Prep is still important and I always shower then turn on the hot water at the sink and rub it into my face with some dandruff hair conditioner. I keep running my hands under the hot water and into my face to wash off the conditioner. Once the conditioner is gone I keep my face and hands wet and squirt the cream into my hands and then work it into my face.

I think just having your face/hand wet before adding cream is very helpful. If I wait too long before applying cream and my face dries the cream doesn’t work near as well for me. That little bit of added water makes a big difference for me. I also constantly rinse my razor under the sink to add more water to my face.

For soaps I never had much luck with most of them. They just didn’t feel like they protected my face that well. B&M Omnibus is my favorite and the only one I use anymore. Maybe I just never loaded enough soap with other brands? I’m gonna revisit my soaps and do some testing once I’m done testing new blades/razors out.

I agree, you need a wet face and hands to apply canned shaving foam.  And I rinse my face between passes before reapplying more foam.

I wonder how many skip the water all together and never get a good shave with the cream. Water is a great lubricant.

For post shave I like to wash my face clean of cream using cold water and rub the cold water into my face. Then I dry it with a towel and then add witchhazel. I keep the witch hazel in a squirt bottle and do a couple squirts in my palm to rub into my face as needed. You can also add a little extra 91% alcohol to the witch hazel if you want more of a kick.

Then I rub some hand soap (usually Yardley) into my hands and clean my face of the witchhazel since I don’t care for the post feel. The Yardley soap leaves a wonderful feel after the witchhazel. But any soap you like will do.

If I really mess something up I’ll use a stypic pencil before witch hazel and then after I’m done rub some talc/old gold bond into my face and wipe it free of excess. That’s very rare anymore. Shaving balm also works well but I hate the greasy feeling.

Hydration is every shaver's best friend

For me, there is just no substitute for the process of scrubbing the beard with a brush. Regardless of the brushless product (e.g. Cremo, etc.), the shave is never as good as when I use a brush and face lather. It really only adds about two minutes to the process but does so much to soften the beard, drive the lather into the hairs. etc.

I never want to use brushless products again.

Not at all. Sometimes, time itself is uncompromising and one has to take what one can get. It's the law of life & priorities, same with shaving. Life is more important, wet shaving is more of an indulgence than a necessity. For me at least it is. I agree that a good soap & brush does wonders and completes the ritual but, one can survive a canned foam shave from time to time.
