I was on a Facebook shaving group page and one of the members was lamenting the fact that he missed a "drop" of a maker's soap/splash. It made me think. Is this what you hobbyists want? The game? The exclusivity? The anticipation?

It isn’t about exclusivity or the hunt for me. It’s just that if I am interested to buy something and I miss out because I didn’t see the limited drop or I wasn’t quick enough checking out, then it is disappointing. But I get over it - there are lots of soaps and brushes I love that are in plentiful supply, and the hard to get stuff is only that way because it is low volume production, not because it is life-changing.

Soap is just soap in the end, and badger hair is just hair from a badger, in China, from a factory that all the other badger hair is processed in.

Not for me, I don’t need a second job. I think these types of things capitalize on intrigue and excitement.

How can you keep things fresh without the “drop” aspect? I think about Saponificio Varesino and their yearly “special editions”. They seem to put the effort into developing a singular scent and releasing it, but never limited. I don’t buy and try each one, but I certainly check to see if the scent might be appealing to me.

Personally, I used to try and get certain soaps/AS/razors when i knew they were coming out. But it was never about exclusivity or the game. It was more of the fact I just wanted the item/scent and was willing to log in at the release time to try and get it.

i've now come to a point in my wet-shaving journey where rarely go after "limited" releases. It's just not worth my time when there are so many artisans that "keep the shelves stocked". Having said that, I get why many enjoy the "race/game" aspect of it.

OTOH, I will admit I do like the idea of seasonal releases in soap/splashes. For seasonals, if i miss it, no big deal...it will be out again next year.

On top of SV, Stirling does it all the time. Yet Rod doesn't run out, or if he does he makes more, until the season is over.

Like AQU said, it adds some newness and excitement, without making it a darn game.

My answer  to the OP's question is NO.

If "drops" are what's happening in the way of marketing and generating sales - then I pass.  Like most wetshavers here, I have more than sufficient razors-blades-soaps-etc to last a long time.

I'm not interested in playing a game to get a product when there are alternatives that are easily acquired.  And if I miss out - well - I missed out.  

Just my view.  As always YMMV.

For me it's definitely a turn off. Not interested in this aspect of the hobby whatsoever.

The problem begins with "I was on Facebook".  Having never been on Facebook, I don't have that problem.  
I do occasionally miss out on something (like the Lambda Athena Razor) that was only publicized on Facebook, 
but I can live with that.  It's a small price to pay for not being a part of a monolithic groupthink machine.
