Non-GMO would be nice, since I'm not into smearing pesticides and fungicides on my face.

Oh, you mean something like lanolin.  Big Grin

No thanks, I'll pass on the animal sweat and dead skin cells and environmental grime that are attached.

I’m also not sure mainstream customers will care enough.

...And that's a problem.

Also, to Steve's point, there is "certified organic".

I’ve seen ‘USDA Certified Organic’ but that’s related to farm goods it seems. There’s an overview here, but notice the lack of mention of pharmaceuticals or cosmetics.

Cosmetics in the EU are governed by a body more like the US Food and Drug Administration, which does not regulate cosmetic products that are not taken internally unless there’s a clear threat to public health or there are health benefit claims made for the product. That’s how I understand it but it is a complicated system.

Steak isn't a sticky substance. I can also rinse a steak under the faucet if I choose.

Steve56 is basically right about the cosmetics here with regards to the FDA here in the USA. I am not an expert on the organic side, but have studied the cosmetic regulations.
Bottom line for makers...don’t make any claims beyond, “you’ll look great and smell great.”

Gotcha on your point!
I really just meant that soap makers could use oils/ingredients that are labeled as certified organic. (I didn't mean that artisans' products should "go get certified as organic", although that would be the most reliable, trust me, I know.)

Because we’re kindred spirits in the fight against “Big Lanolin”, I’m going to plug some numbers in and see what it does to our cost to go with organic ingredients. I’m curious now.
