I Got Enough Lather for 3 Passes plus Touchup

Am I the only one who doesn't give that much thought to how much or little soap he uses?  If I use a bit too little, either because of the soap, the water, the brush, or the most likely culprit, my technique, I simply add more.  If I end up with a lather that was more than I reasonably needed (at least 50+% of the time), it just feels luxurious.  

As for the gentleman in the blog that grim mentions, I agree that the post seems quite confusing.  I don't care enough to think too much about it.  I suppose BadDad has a point and one could pose the question directly to the blogger but bringing it to our wider audience here at DFS adds its own spin to the discussion and I, for one, like that.

Personally, I have definitely made a dent in my favorite soaps and creams but not so much in those that are serviceable but just don't have that extra je ne sais quoi.

Nothing wrong with a little free speculation and discussion of things outside of this particular forum. I guess he didn't find a need to "go right to the source" and get a serious answer from the guy. Its just something to talk about, that's all. I'm sure grim doesn't care about some of the things you post, but doesn't feel the need to go on your thread and say "Who really cares?" in a condescending manner. Sorry, I'm not trying to turn this thread into bickering back and forth, I just thought your above post was a little harsh.

No argument, and I certainly didnt intend to be condescending...I was quite honestly trying to understand what it was that grim was looking for with this topic. Legitimately, I was asking if his interest was in how we, as individuals, prepare our lather, or whether he was interested in how the blogger, as an individual, prepares his own and thusly goes through so much soap.

I thoroughly enjoy the conversation amongst members as to what each person does when preparing and applying their lather, and I greatly enjoy hearing not only the technical process, but the thought process behind it. You never know when someone else may have a thought that sparks new ideas into our own routines. That's probably my favorite part of these types of discussions. If that is to be the topic, than this is one I will pay particular attention to

Personally, I felt the topic was being bogged down with speculation as to how and why the blogger went through 20 soaps in 6 months, or didn't as we each assumed on our own, and did not quite understand why, if that was the interest, he didnt simply ask. If the topic is to be one of rumour and speculation about the habits of a shaver that does not participate here, than I can, and will, go on with my day and ignore it henceforth. I dont really care to speculate on someone else's process without involving them in the conversation.

My questions were not intended to be condescending, rather a legitimate effort to understand the proposed topic of conversation, and where it may lead in the future.

To the original poster next time you shave try and load as little as possible just 5 or 10 swirls. Then face lather. I bet you it will produce a large amount of lather.

I think the others explained it well. I read his post. I then remembered reading about 3 passes plus touchup and how popular that phrase was, but really just wanted to hear what others thought about 20 soaps in 6 months. Thats it. No conspiracy. Just discussion. And it certainly got people thinking about it. I'm the last person to worry about throwing away soap. I call it "just soap, not liquid gold" and if I don't like something, it goes in the trash.

I don't really care what the author's motivation is. Its more interesting to hear what YOU GUYS (or Ladies) think. The collective, crowd sourced opinion is more powerful and interesting.

That would be me? Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. I'm flexible and don't believe in any rigid technique. I'm open.

BadDad I guess it's one of those instances you described before about tone not coming through with words on a screen. I apologize for accusing you of being condescending. I really should have known that was not your intent.

In regards to the topic, I just find it unbelievable to have finished 20 soaps this year no matter how far gone they would've been prior. I've been into this hobby for a year and a half and haven't gone through a single tub! I do a lot of sampling though. Still trying to find those handful of gems that will form a steady rotation, if that's ever a possibility...

I always whip up more lather than I need to shave, but it never goes to waste. When my shave's done, I squeeze whatever's left in the brush onto my hands and hand-wash my face. One, it's better than any face soap you're likely to use. Two, it almost invariably reveals little spots that require further touch-up. Win-win. Waste not, want not. The wonderful Wizard of Oz. When I was using my MdC Brain Bowl for thirty straight shaves, I was using almost 4g/shave. I know because I kept track with a scale. Full disclosure...I used a Simpson CH2 Synthetic and...admittedly, loaded the living daylights out of the bowl.
