I thought of something similar — perhaps announcing the release month of a specific soap a few months in advance.
Then, when absolutely certain that the soap (aftershave, what not) is ready for release, announce the exact date 5–7 days in advance.
I think he’s done that. Look at his Release Page
In a way, yes. But there is often a “definitive date” maybe a month or two in advance, and when the time gets closer, that date tends to get pushed back.

My thought is to only announce a definitive date when all the product is actually in stock. (That is, manufactured, cured, in jars, with labels, etc.) That way, the date will hold and will not have to be pushed back.

(My guess is that announcing a release 5–7 days in advance would then give most customers time to prepare for said release. Just a thought.)

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

I see the release of Angel has been postponed again to Feb.9th. Just a heads up in case anyone was wondering.

At this point I wish there was some option for a pre- order. I have no problem waiting for a particular soap, but I have gone out of my way several times to be available at each day set by GD and each time it keeps getting postponed. If I didn't have a discount code I don't think I would even bother, would just use what I have or acquire thru trade. The best solutions for these problems are to either offer a pre-order or (as mentioned) set a date once product is completed and ready to ship. Either option would save a lot of aggravation for both the artisan and the customer.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Releasing soaps has been complicated. Moving forward, releasing new soaps after the next batch will be done via "Notify Me When Available".

That's a good idea, Maggards has that option and it seems to work out well. Plus that way you can get an idea of how many soaps to produce. Starting a small business is a learning process, it takes time eventually can become a well oiled machine. With the quality of the soap bases it seems like most people want to see you succeed and do well. The nice thing about the forums is you can get advice from customers and other vendors to help your business grown and expand.

Had a wonderful shave with Wonderland this morning. Really like the unique musky earthy scent of this soap. Lather held a boat load of water and was soothing on the skin.
