Going straight, first timer...

Thinking of going straight, seems like the natural move to make at this point, I tried a Parker shavette but it was little dicey! so I gave up on that idea!

What is good starter razor and strop, makers? Where is a good place to acquire them that have good prices and come shave ready?

There are a few places to get good shave ready razors. Strike Gold Shaving at Etsy has excellent introductory razors for good prices with good edges.

I really like my horsehide and linen strop from Razor Emporium. A bit above introductory in price range. Try a poor man strop from Whipped Dog. Larry also has quality vintage straights with good edges and a balsa strop with powder abrasives for refreshing a tired edge.

I have a shave ready vintage I could let go for a good price as well...shoot me a PM if you don't find what you're looking for elsewhere and we will see what we can come up with...

This is a $35 strop of Cowhide Latigo Leather w/ Black Nylon Linen 3" Wide x 22" Long

When you look for your first razor don't get mesmerized by the razors scales. You don't shave with the scales, it is the blade that is important so look for a quality razor (vintage are a great place to start) that has little hone wear and little to no rust (some rust can be easily removed unless it is on the edge). You should be able to find a nice razor in the $50-60 range on the auction sites or from a member. I'll PM you some information on SR shaving. Remember, we want to help make this transition as easy as possible for you so ask lots of questions.

I'm not a professional anything, but I can get a quality vintage razor with a good shaving edge into your hands for about $35 shipped. As I recall, you're in San Diego, so shipping to you would be easy. I don't have strops or anything like that, as I am not really a "business". I just happen to buy a ton of beat up razors and restore them for personal use. I have plenty that I do not use, despite being good razors. Hit me up, I'll toss you a few options with pricing, and let's see if we can get you shaving!

GKR1 , I would definitely get the razor from BadDad. I got my first straight from him for about that price. I now have some very nice razors, though the one from him is still the best shaver. I would also the the start strop and kit from Whipped Dog. You'll definitely mess up your first strop, possibly cutting it in half.

I'm not a fan of cowhide latigo for strops. I am a huge fan of webbed nylon for the first stage of stropping. Most latigo strops don't perform as well as they should. There are good ones, though in the minority. Once you get to a point where you aren't damaging the strop, I prefer something in the $75 to $100 range.

I got my first SR from him, very good blade. Sam knows his stuff and the strop webbing he has is excellent.
