Hey everyone,

This week I stumbled upon a helpful video by Lance Hedrick concerning pour overs that I thought I would share:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG5Tc8MR2_4

What I found helpful were were all the tidbits of information that was shared in addition to the recipe.
It explained why world championship recipes are probably not going to work for you due to the difference in the beans and the extraction levels they are going for to please the judges palate.
It also had good information on how to fix your draw down while it is happening instead of letting the brew go badly.
It gave a helpful exercise to do to get a feel for the correct pour rate for the recipe.
It also gave tips of varying the water temperature, bloom time, and coffee to water ratio based on the roast level of the beans.
I plan to incorporate some of those tidbits with my existing pour over recipes.
I have not tried Lance's recipe yet, but I plan to try it soon.

Right now, I am working through Jame's Hoffmann's "A Better 1 Cup V60 Technique" recipe:

Thanks for posting this! I love pour over and use Hoffman's method for French Press coffees. I will put these in my library for viewing soon!

MaineYooper  You are very welcome!

I would suggest viewing the two Hoffmann videos on YouTube so you can see the comments. Jame's corrects things he said in both videos in the comments for each video.

I have been enjoying the "better one cup V60" recipe. I have read that it works for the Kalita Wave and I would like to try it for that dripper. I would like to find good recipes that work well for the ceramic Kalita Wave (maybe I should start a separate thread for that). Each type of Kalita Wave (steel, glass, ceramic, etc) all have different flow rates and most recipes I find are for the steel Kalita Wave so they have to be adapted.

I just finished reading Jame's newest book "How to make the best coffee at home". It was a very good read. I am also reading his "World Atlas of Coffee" that I picked up on sale for the Kindle for around $2. It looks good so far.

Good Shave, thanks for the enablement! I upped my morning coffee game after viewing these videos, and purchased a red plastic V60 (it helps wake me up, being so colorful!) and a new scale with a timer on it. I find Hoffmann's method easiest right now, as the one cup V60 cone can't take all my water at once. For about 5 years, I have been using the Japanese Bee House pour over, ceramic, and black (easy on my tired, just waking up eyes!) and have enjoyed it. Before the V60 came, I started using the Hoffmann method on it. Maybe it's all in my head, but I thought I was getting a better tasting cup! My first cup with the V60 set the bar even higher. What a delicious cup of coffee! And I had been thinking about not buying the roast I was using as I was as happy with it as I recall. But the brew from the V60 was outstanding!

Note the cup. Almost all persons my age recall some relative if not their own family having this distinctive pattern. But if you look closer, this set has monsters on it! This is from Calamity Ware, whose motto for the mug is "Things could be worse!"

You are so welcome! It is only fair since you have enabled me with various razors. Big Grin

I am so glad you are enjoying the recipes!

I love your cup! Thanks for the details.
I usually brew into one of my insulated mugs by Fellows (move mugs/everywhere mugs) but I ordered an inexpensive glass 800ml brewing carafe for when I am brewing larger amounts of coffee.I think being able to see the dripping rate from my ceramic Kalita Wave 185 will help me with my brews with that dripper.

I have that same red plastic V60 (if yours is the '02'printed on it). You may already know that the V60 comes in three sizes (01 being the smallest and 03 being the largest). If your V60 cannot hold all the water you need, you can get a larger one. I have a white plastic V60-01 that I started with after much research into the different materials for V60s (heat loss/retention/durability/etc.). I then moved to the red plastic V60-02 as many of the recipes I could find for the V60 were for the 02 size. You can still brew for one person with the 02 size.

I have also played with the melodrip and the Gabi Drip Master B with my V60. Here is a review of the melodrip with comparison to the Gabi Drip Master B as well.
I get more extraction with the melodrip, so if my beans/grind/water temp/pour rate leads to coffee that is a little too mellow, I use the melodrip to make the coffee stronger.

I have also used the Fellows Stag XF dripper and have a few French presses around as well.

I have not tried a Japanese Bee House dripper. Those look nice.

My current favorite 'I am not awake yet but need to make coffee' is the AeroPress. There are hundreds of brew recipes out there for it and it travels well.
I am thinking about a Hario Mugen for a 'pour in the water and walk away while it brews' dripper. It would help me work through my stockpile of V60-02 filters.

Coffee scales are great! It makes your brews more repeatable. I am on my second coffee scale (after my first one was a little flaky during one of my brews).

I currently use a 1zpresso JX manual burr grinder that has been very helpful with getting consistent brews.
Here is a review of it in case you are looking for one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWs80A67joc

That is probably enough for one post (ha ha).

I have the V60-01, as I am the only one drinking coffee here! I also have a stainless steel pour over from Javapresse, but there are many on Amazon, each with a different name on them!

I got the Bee House initially due to its simplicity and that it used Melitta filters, which are easier to source than the V60-01 filters.

And last summer I upgraded my manual grinder to a Timor, and I really like it.

I will check out Hoffman's books, too. You are just a fount of knowledge, and helping me do my part to be a good consumer!

You are quite welcome.

Here are two more videos I ran across last night that may help as well.

I believe you are correct. I never knew the name, just that we had a set that was a wedding gift that my folks got in 1963. I googled the name and found a bit of info, and I do think that is the pattern. Not sure what prize to send you, though...  Tongue
