I got a PM about our aftershave and thought it might be good to post this since other people may be curious. I take soap, brush, aftershave, perfume, and a DE razor all the time. However, when I am NOT checking a bag, I use a crappy disposable razor because the DE blades have and will be taken from a carry on. I learned this the hard way a few years ago. What's your experience?

Dom, I have /had the exact experience. Blades get confiscated. I have successfully smuggled some through - but it is a gamble. I take brush, razor, AFS, soap, and plan razor blade purchase at my destination.

I like to carry my full kit, even when not checking a bag. So, in my dopp bag, I carry a DE blade separately from the razor (and a cartridge razor just in case). Sometimes the blade gets through, sometimes not. But so long as it is not in the razor, TSA will only make me throw away the blade. I also like to look ahead if I can purchase a blade at my destination. I've found that the King Gillette blades are sometimes available at CVSes (and you can sometimes check online, although that has also been proven to be inaccurate). Does anyone know how to most easily find whether DE blades might be available? TommyCarioca, how do you plan ahead?

Agreed that it’s aways smart to leave the blade separate from the razor, and in my experience if you can break down a 3piece razor it will give you better chances of them not opening up your bag to check it out.
I’ve also never had issues with taking an injector razor, with loaded blade. I think to them it’s basically just like a Mach3-type of razor.

Useful to know that SE razors are seen differently

I put my dopp kit in my carryon bag to fly home the other night, I had brought a DE with me but pulled the blade out and threw it away beforehand. My bag did get flagged for a search and he keyed in on the razor. I could tell he'd seen DE's before and said they do look for loaded blades, so I'm glad I had taken it out (not sure if they would have let me take the blade out and throw it away or if they'd have yanked the razor completely).

These make it through security.  They treat them the same as a single-edge disposable razor.

McKesson Double Edge Prep Razors

I did a review on them a while ago.  They're surprisingly good.

Yep.  The blade is fixed.  Just like a plastic disposable cart, you could remove it if you tried hard enough, but it's not meant to be replaceable.
