First time using a Thater

I pretty much only face lather.

My Thater is a two band bulb. It was a 4125/2 but I put it in a different handle at a lower loft because it felt too soft to me. Also I prefer taller handles.

I think I put it in a handle with a socket that was too large. So even though it's lower set now, it has the same feel because it splays much more. I used epoxy too so it ain't coming out without destroying it sadly.

I have been thinking about picking up one of the beehives BulllGoose has. The variety is nice in handle colors too. Fans and bulbs both.

If I could get one, I'd love to find a two band in a plexi handle with the black socket. Maggard razors had a few of them when they started carrying Thaters and I hesitated. I want to say that the various sizes were all gone in a matter of days. The biggest one was something enormous like 32mm.

I, too, wish that the plexi ones were more readily available, although the solid-colored ones are superb, as well.

I find myself ordering fan shaped knots if the option is there. I own several bulb brushes, but I prefer the fan or hybrid shaped knots. I've never tried any of the flat top knots that are out there now. I face lather the majority of the time. The fan shaped knots give me the sense of all badger, all of the time. lol I can see trying to explain that statement to my wife. Somehow, I don't think she would get it.

I don't own any Thater brushes at the moment, but every time I log on here I feel the urge to spend money.

I have two 2-band 4125/3s, one each in bulb and fan. Even though they have the same loft and the same hair, they are completely different from each other. The bulb, while soft, has a good amount of backbone and is capable of providing a gentle massage. The fan is an absolute monster that can cover half of your face with badger. When I use this one I get the feeling of shaving with a cloud that people often refer to. Both were soft and released lather well from the get go.

I'd suggest that if you want a firmer brush with less splay, get the bulb. If you want to bury your face in badger hair, get the fan, though the fan will not massage you like the bulb.

I'm glad that I have both, but I'd be perfectly happy with either.

Thaters are lovely brush, but even the larger 2-Band bulbs don't have enough backbone, for me. If the knots were denser, then I probably would have one in my collection.

The /3 designation indicates that you have a 28mm brush. Obviously, a 28mm fan is a large knot especially compared to a 26mm fan. Both have different characteristics. All of my brushes with the exception of 2 are fan shape. I own 23, 25, 26 and 28mm brushes. Choosing a brush is subjective at best. To my knowledge Thater brushes can not be custom made. Thats why I have had several Wiborgs and Shavemacs made for me and they all perform differently. The fact that you like a bulb shape is certainly a personal decision and if it is good or you stick with it. I am considering a /4 in a fan shape.

I have yet to try a Thater, but I have a Savile Row 3124 on its way, and I'm excited to see what all the hype is about
