First shave on a blade

The pasties took over the thread, and that’s perfectly delightful.   Since I don’t have experience with them, I can only comment on blades.

The first shave can be a little “too much” with many brands of blades. I always palm strop a new blade for that reason, although there are of course those that work fine straight out of the box.

You're the second person to mention palm stropping, I may have to give that a shot. How many strokes do you usually take?

If it’s a double edge blade, I’ll usually do five on the left edge, five on the right, then flip the blade over and do the same on that side.

Now, that’s really not a lot. Doubling the amount might be a good idea. But I feel that even the small amount of stropping I do makes the new blade slightly smoother before its first use.

Of course, it could all just be in my head — after all, the placebo effect is real.

Pasties are delicious for sure! It's been a while since I've had one. I'm gonna have to change that!

From what I grew up hearing, the pasties were attributed to the "old world" miners. The Upper Peninsula had a lot of iron and copper mining in the late 1800s into the mid 1900s. Paper was the industry when I was graduating high school in the early 80s.

Yes! I once brought a female from grad school in Indiana to the UP, and as we passed a billboard advertising pasties, I asked if she wanted one. I narrowly escaped getting slapped!
