First shave on a blade

This morning with my shave I realized that the blade I had in my razor was pulling a little at the end, and I will need to throw a new blade in before my next shave.  Thing is, I almost universally hate the first shave on each blade.  Anyone else feel like this?  Shaves 2-the N where N is the last shave before tugging are great, but the first and last are always the worst for me.

What are your thoughts?

Absolutely, though not necessarily with every razor brand. I noticed this phenomenon several years ago and I think you will find it is a more common complaint than one might think.

I do palm strop my blades before each use and find it helps though others who have tried this don't believe it does anything. As always, YMMV.

When I first was learning the skills for traditional DE shaving, I noted that a couple of brands of blades tended to do this. Later, after finding the blades that work best in my line up, I didn't notice it any more. Now I find it is only noticeable with one brand, and only if I am "man-handling" the razor instead of working harmoniously with it!

Does the yooper portion of your user name have anything to do with Michigan's Upper Peninsula?

I was raised in the U.P., went to college at Northern Michigan University on the sunny shores of southern Lake Superior, and taught high school chemistry for 7 years in Manistique (on top of Lake Michigan, as they would say) and Iron Mountain. As luck would have it, I was raised in Central Michigan, my family vacationed between Curtis and Newberry every year and I went to university at LSSU. Whitefish point remains my favorite spot on the planet to this day.

Then you probably know what a pasty is! I visited my family in September and was able to get a couple. Tedious (I think) to make, but I love eating them! Iron Mountain, where my folks live, has 3 or 4 shops that specialize in those "meat pockets". What ribs are to my in-law, pasties are to me!

And two of my favorite DE suppliers are in Michigan, Maggard Razors and Mike's Natural Soaps!

Pasty's are a delicacy I can't quite explain to anyone in Virginia. Their history is pretty cool too. Maggard's Razors was one of the first supply places I was find, I couldn't have been happier to find out they are in Michigan.
