Feather Pro-Guard blades

What is it about Feather blades and me.  The DE Feathers die on me after two shaves, this Pro-Guard died on me today after one shave, and I just don't enjoy the Auto-Strop type Feathers and have never gotten a comfortable shave from an Auto-Strop razor with them in it.  I assume it has to be me as Feather blades, generally, are well thought of.  So far the only Feather blade I've tried with decent success is the Feather Pro (not the Pro-Guard).

Does anyone else find the various Feather blades just not for them?

Totally with you Freddy. I've only ever used the regular DE blades and the AC Pros in a Colonial General. Not impressed with either. The DE blades are just OK and only last 2-3 shaves. I don't really think they are that much sharper than say an Astra SP (my preferred blade) and nowhere near as smooth. The AC Pros were just tug city. Not sharp or smooth, at least in the General for me.

I find AC Pros harsh, but AC Pro Supers are just right for me. The extra thickness seems to make the difference. Pro Supers are my only blade nowadays. I was never impressed with Feather DE blades. Too harsh, with one exception. In the Weber DLC, they were perfect.

I never liked the Feather DE Hi Stainless blades. Awfully expensive for 1 use per blade...

I like the AC Pro blades in my CJB shavette. Palm stropped, it is smooth from the first shave, and lasts 3-4 shaves for me.

The Pro Guard gave me an absolutely glorious shave...once. Extremely disappointing in that the first use of a palm stropped Pro Guard was quite literally the smoothest, most comfortable shavette shave I have ever experienced. Enough so that I was excited to use the CJB 2 nights in a row, which very rarely happens. Alas, on the second go, the blade was tuggy immediately, and provided one of the worst shavette shaves I've ever experienced.

I only have 1 AC style shavette, and I don't favor it over my straights, so it doesn't get daily use. Once every few days, while I am still figuring out which blades I like, but not with regularity. I am looking at getting an AC style SE, just because I don;t like buying blades for only 1 razor...

Wow, never heard of the CJB shavette. Looks like a very affordable alternative to the Feather AC.
BTW, Chris, have you tried towel-stropping? I find that 10 or 15 two-way strokes on a terrycloth towel helps get me 20-30 shaves per blade with the Feather AC Pro Supers.

I like palm stropping. I even palm strop many of my straights, and my GEM se blades before using them. It just smooths them out a little bit.

I have a variety of canvas and linen strops I use for straights but no terrycloth. I may have to give that a try...

I always palm strop my blades and agree with BadDad that it smooths them out a bit.  Because of their narrow width, I found Artist Club blades difficult to palm strop (I don't use them in a shavette) so my friend Mike came up with a mini paddle strop for me that I really like and seems to do the job.  It's two sided so when the leather wears out on one side I can simply flip it.

How about forearm stropping? Yep, It works nicely, and you get two grades for the price of one.

I'm shocked that it died on you after one shave! Feather ProGuards last for about 16 to 20 shaves for me, easily. And I have a fairly tough beard. Freddy, you must have some facial hair. I tip my hat to you. Feather DEs I dislike. But the ProGuards are my go-to blade for my Feather AC, alongside Kai MG (proguards). This confirms, once again, that in this hobby, YMMV.

This is so YMMV, Charlie.  Ironically, my beard is what I would call average and I can usually use a variety of DE and SE razors with different blades and get at least decent, if not superior, results.  The Feather family and I, though, do not seem to get along.  C'est la vie.
