Feather AS-D2 Safety Razor

I just bought this from Andrew on this forum, and got a pleasant surprise. I didn't think I could get a good shave from such a mild razor. I was wrong.
This razor gave me a very clean shave, and without any irritation or risk.  The fit, finish, weight and balance are excellent, and I used a Feather blade.
 
For my second shave I added a shim, and for my third shave I added a second shim.  Marginal improvements at best.  The razor is really good, as it is.
This razor was designed to be used with the world's sharpest blade (Feather). So I wouldn't expect the same quality shave to be had with lesser blades.

I'm glad I bought this razor. I've been enjoying it. I think I'll keep it. It's a damn fine razor.

I use mine frequently. It stands out from the pack and delivers a clean shave every time. I have been using Gillette Silver Blues.

This razor also works quite well with top vintage blades such as Wilkinson Light Brigades and Personna 74 Tungstens.

I have always been on the fence with this razor. does a feather AS-D2 shave and agression level compare to a Razorock Mamba ? Or perhaps to which plate on the rockwell 6S/6C or which setting on the Merkur progress ?

I can use mild razors but for a spot or two around the chin where it needs a notch step up in aggression ! Hence I am always on the fence for mild radkrs.

I've never tried any of the razors you mentioned.  So I cannot compare to them.  To me it compares best to the Gillette Tech, but more efficient.

It is as mild and forgiving as the Tech, but gives a closer and cleaner shave.  I can get a good 1 pass shave from the Feather, but not from the Tech.

For me the Feather razor (coated at Delta Echo) is quite similar to the RazoRock Mamba and the Charcoal Goods Level 1. I have all of them in my rotation.

I need to try mine again. I didn't care for it at the time. Picked up the WCS/Charcoal Goods collaboration CNC razor the El Capitan around the same time and fell in love with it. However, I've been rotating through my collection lately and picked up a new Timeless. Also kinda craving the Karve. I think it's a good time to work back through my gear (a few vintage Gillette razors included) and see what stands out. Thanks for the inspiration.

I am a huge fan of my AS-D2. It was the most expensive gear I had prior to picking up a custom brush with Declaration knot this summer.

Here's my suggestion.  1) Use Feather blades; they are the sharpest, 2) put two shims between the blade and the baseplate.  
That worked for me.  If that still doesn't cut it, then you simply need a more aggressive razor.
