by which i mean something that works well as a preshave but isn't marketed as such and so is ideally cheaper.

only two i've tried-
udderly smooth body cream
neutrogena ultra gentle hydrating cleanser creamy formula

looking for some thing like proraso white.

Eric, give regular Noxema a try. I have used both Proraso (though the green) pre-shave and Noxema and to me they are very similar.

I use CeraVe moisturizing cream, with glycerin. It works as well as any preshave product I have tried. I just use about 1/4 tsp or less rubbed into wet skin and left on for 2-3 minutes while my brush soaks before lathering. The big 16 oz. jar lasts a really long time.

A good bar of artisan soap. I use my own, but Stirling and Soap Commander work great too.
