favorite bay rum products

Having spoken to Ryan while he was working on all of his latest T+S soaps and aftershaves, he was pretty clear that West Indies wasn't intended to be a Bay Rum but rather an original creation inspired by fragrances common to the West Indies.  Some of those scents are spices used in cooking so its natural that for some people they will associate West Indies with Caribbean food.  I consider T+S West Indies and Chatillon Lux Blackberry Blossom Bay to be original fragrance creations that happen to have West Indian Bay as one of the scent notes.  These two creations have helped me move from being a lover of bay rum to being a lover of all things bay.

I will say, I bought a bay laurel and orange (I believe) bath soap when I was in Colorado last year and the scent was amazing.

I think bay is a very masculine scent.  A lot of the scents out there could be suitable (with maybe a few tweaks) for both men and women but not bay.

Heads up, gents: Bay Rum products are about to become fairly scarce. Hurricane Maria wiped out pretty much the entire crop and stocks of proper bay oil, and it's not likely that the crop will recover for several years. I have yet to find a source for West Indie Bay that wasn't exorbitantly expensive, and we will be suspending production of our Bay Rum products for the foreseeable future until we can locate an alternate supplier.

Heads up, gents: Bay Rum products are about to become fairly scarce. Hurricane Maria wiped out pretty much the entire crop and stocks of proper bay oil, and it's not likely that the crop will recover for several years. I have yet to find a source for West Indie Bay that wasn't exorbitantly expensive, and we will be suspending production of our Bay Rum products for the foreseeable future until we can locate an alternate supplier.

That is such a bummer! When i saw that you mentioned that in your thread a few days ago I went out and bought more B&M Bay Rum soap and aftershave - 6 of each so I think I'm good on B&M Bay Rum for at least a year I appreciate the heads up. Being a generally skeptical person by nature I am wondering if perhaps there isn't some manipulation/speculation going on in the market - does anybody have independent verification of the destruction of bay plantations? I mean hurricanes go through every year, hurricane season with which one cannot reason (JB) so the crop could conceivably be destroyed every year couldn't it. I want pictures. And a spike in the price of bay futures on the Caribbean Commodity Exchange.

I love the smell of Krampert's Finest AS.  I haven't used his soap, but the AS is fantastic!

I agree with you about Krampert's. I haven't used his soap either, but Mike's BR is very nice.

I also love Krampert's Finest, I used the soap and aftershave yesterday and I'm going to do it again today. I think Krampert's is one of the best traditional bay rums out there and the soap base is very good too. Mike's is very nice as well. Its easy to forget about these guys in all the new this and new that coming out all the time but I think these guys can still hold their own.

While I certainly do not have a commodities prospectus, every distributor I have dealt with, and several distillers as well, has told me that bay oil is simply unobtainable at this point in time due to the extensive, record-breaking damage. The same is true for medical saline bags, which are in extremely short supply in the US for the moment due to the US Government's failure to move quickly to begin large-scale repairs in Puerto Rico. As I understand it, quite a few things were wiped out by the storm.

I think the "Aubrey Organics Spice Islands" is awesome, the combination between bay rum and vetiver is great

I've never cut myself so badly shaving that I've needed a saline drip. OK, I'm kidding, thanks for putting things in perspective. We do tend to get single minded here don't we.

I never cheer for hurricane damage, but the lack of bay rum soaps/scents now available actually makes me happy. They still suck IMO lol.

True. We often get caught up in what's (supposedly) New and improved. And while newer products are sometimes better (Wickham's, Reef Point...), older stuff (MWF...) can be worth remembering.
