I hope I am not out of line but I just found out that there are dozens of Apps for iOS operating systems and maybe Android as well that are tracking everything you do as well as looking at your screen. One of them is Taptalk. I do not use it but I know many of you do. If given permission I will give the web site address where I found that out. You have to do some searching.

This is new to people? A little worrisome, as it has been going on for a while now. Smartphones usually allowed the user to determine whether location tracking is enabled or not, but this doesn't apply to third-party apps.

Yup. Here is an article from 2017, which is why I was so surprised people had not heard about this.

From that article:

"In April 2011, iPhone and iPad users were surprised to discover that, not only was their device keeping track of where they’d been, it also was storing very detailed location information in a plain-text file on the phone. The data was derived by way of cell towers and Wi-Fi hotspots the devices encountered, and was added anonymously to a crowdsourced database.

Apple later said the devices were keeping more information than intended due to a bug, and issued a patch that reduced the amount of data. But, because it was used to improve and speed up location services, the practice continued."

It was only a bug because the location history was stored in plain text, not because it was tracking people's every movement. Those location services are used to target ads, which is what this issue is all about and why it will continue.

Yep, all about the $$$$$.

everything is tracking us these days, it's all about marketing and such. while you can limit your exposure to an extent, there's no way to fully cut it off unless you live out in some remote cabin without any type of communications, etc..
