I just saw the same lather bowl on Italian Barber except in black. It’s plastic and $18 which is wee bit cheaper than the CC copper bowl. At that price it may be worth giving it a shot.

I use a navy blue Goodfellas’ smile bowl that appears to be identical to the black Razorock bowl sold on Italian Barber and similar to Franks’s new bowl.    Although I am no lather expert, I have not experienced any issues making good lather.  I fully expect Frank and others with more experience to easily whip up extremely nice lather.

The bowl is definitely bigger than what is pictured.  That is also a positive because it is wide enough so that I do not hit the sides with my brush.  The place to rest your brush is a nice feature I definitely use.   Although it is not as aesthetically pleasing as a Captain’s Choice copper bowl, it will get the job done and is very efficient.  It is the only bowl I have used with Ethos, and I thought the lather turned out fantastic!  No complaints from me.

I see that Frank owns a Timeless but if others are looking for an inexpensive bowl and don’t mind a small, potentially unnoticeable flaw, Timeless sells a “Scratch N Dent BLUE Shaving Bowl” for only $7. And, I believe it was even cheaper a couple of weeks ago.  I don’t own one, but I read a lot of good things about it.  At that price, I am considering order one to at least try it.

I hope you enjoy your new bowl Frank!!

Personally…for the sake of simplicity..I forgo bowl shaving when traveling. Just face lather…
I also use a Simpson Wee Scot brush as my travel brush. I find with it that I use a lot less soap which conserves my supply…as I bring just one soap..and generates a great lather. It’s also tiny. I use a small plastic pill bottle as a carrying case.
The perfect travel shave kit for me. YMMV.

Thanks for the feedback and I think the main reason I choose this bowl were because of the spot to rest your brush and it looked like it wasn’t to high. I will evaluate it after my first use and post up how it goes. On the Timeless, I’ve had mine since they first released them and I brought it to the warehouse shortly after starting ETHOS so I could test the lather of a new base I was working on or after making a new batch. It does have a really high sides and at the time I had 1 great Dirtybird Scuttle and a Fine shaving bowl that was very low and my Copper Captain’s Choice so I had some good bowls at home and I did both bowl lathering and lather from the jar. I gotta tell you the Timeless using an inexpensive Proraso Professional boar brush I’ve gotten some amazing full bowls of lather with it as the bottom is configured with this swirling pattern on the bottom that whips up the lather very easily. The one drawback is it’s height as if your not careful you’ll bang your shaving brushes handle on the sides and because I didn’t use any of my good brushes with it and didn’t care if I did with the Proraso I’ve gotten overtime so used to it I really don’t hit the sides so if you can pick one up for 50% off I’d grab one if I were you. Am I have to say for pure agitation of a soap that bowl produces lather faster than any bowl I had in my house and if I could give Timeless my feedback I’d say make it about a half an inch wider at the base and lower the sides by an inch and that would be one awesome lather bowl.

Also when using my Tallow Shave Crème nothing I’ve used whips that up better than the combo of the Timeless bowl and Proraso boar.

I loved my Copper Captains Choice bowl and if I had to be extremely picky I notice slight drag when using my better badger brushes that I don’t get with the Fine, Dirtybird or the Timeless and I also tested one of their ceramic bowls that had really low sides and it didn’t have any drag but was so low the lather would climb up the sides and overflow. I see that they’ve eliminated that bowl now and only offer the various Copper options.

When jar lathering I always turn my jars completely upside down as to not get or leave a lot of water in the jar to get into the soap. An I never bloom soap as the purpose of curing soap is to remove moisture not add it. Blooming can possibly create micro bacterial growth but also decrease scant strength over time. So scooping and bowl lathering is the optimal method for the long term health of a shave soap and the upside down method would be best if jar lathering. A side note, triple milled soap would be the least affected by to much water/blooming as it would be the most resistant of absorbing water/moisture. Of course people are going to do what they feel comfortable with as far as maintaining their soap. Same as leaving blades in a razor it’s the not optimal way to maintain the integrity of the razor or blade but some just rinse, shake the water and put the razor away for the next use.

I look at it as to each their own.

Frank - My bowl is 5” wide, 2.7” high, and 2.5” depth in the inside, which is a little wider but about the same height of the Timeless.  The CC copper bowl has a stated depth of only 1.5”.   Due to “currently” owning one lathering bowl, I am definitely interested in your review and comparison to the CC and Timeless bowl.

Have a fantastic day!

Hello guys, im new here, registered just to share my experience with Ethos f base soap, just a bit of a backstory, i've been wetshaving for a bit more than 20 years daily , tried probably every artisan soap that exists, only recently jumped into ethos, i was eyeing it a couple of years ago but because it was kinda hard to get skipped it and forgot about its existence (that was a huge mistake).
At first i was not happy with soap performance compared to my top picks, protectiveness was average slickness is average as well, post slickness was nonexistent, but the post shave feel was unrivalled, its the only soap i can use alcoholic aftershave after, so i started experimenting with lathering techniques, bowl lathering didnt work out for me, same as the method described on the website, the lathers i was getting were at most passable, but not something i would comfortably shave with. But then i scooped like 20-30 grams out of jar and put it in another container, just in case if i mess up the product it wouldn't affect all of it, and the lathers i started getting were one of the best or maybe even the best i have ever used, protectiveness slickness and post slickness became top notch.
The method i use to load the brush is swirling dump brush on rinsed soap(i rinse it just before loading brush) this way i get best possible lather not aerated with enough moisture loaded right into brush and can start working it onto my face immediately, the results im getting this way i coudnt be more happy, with unrivalled post shave feel this became the best and my only soap i use, i don't even have the urge to check out any other soap anymore.
When product goes out of extra container i just refill it with same 20 grams so water wouldn't affect main jar
Thank you Frank for creating such an amazing product, you've got yourself a customer for life!

Hello Sir

I have to say thank you and I’m glad you are enjoying the product. What soap scent did you get for your first ETHOS shave soap as I’m curious. Also you mentioned that when you first used it you didn’t get protection, slickness and post shave which is the exact opposite of what customers tell me especially the protection and post shave so how were you loading the soap? Also what container do you move the shave soap to? A bowl or a different jar?

Best regards

Frank
