On your 3 piece razors to stop metal against metal?  I heard two things. 1) yes, good idea.  2) bad idea as it doesn't allow the razor to clamp down as well as it should.  What are your thoughts and practices?

This same subject comes up to get beat to death every so often and there are 2 camps. It's okay and it's not okay......Some razors I use them in and some I don't. NEVER had an issue......

I have two Timeless Titanium razors that came with washers. Since I hope the razors will last 100 years , well beyond my use-by date. I use the washers so as not to scar the baseplate or top end of the handle. On more mundane razors I do not bother as I suspect most will go in the dumpster when I am ready for disposal.

There is no reason that using or not using a washer should have any effect on the shaving properties of the razor. They serve to preserve the cosmetics of the razor.

Living on the edge
I use a washer on all DE razors...no problems whatsoever.
It helps prevent handle markings on underside of baseplate...good for resale considerations.

The only DE razor that will not mark in such a fashion is the Henson...it has a built-in ring made of some
special alloy to prevent marks...on Henson, I don't use any washer and there is no marking either.

I tend to use them on my three-piece razors, however, it inteferes with the threading on my Gillette New SC.

I use them on my Timeless razors and my Wolfman razors.  I just received a new Wolfman and it came with two washers.

I use them now. I didn't used to but I bought an aftermarket handle from maggards (I think) that had a huge burr on the top of the handle. I didn't notice it, and then I heard some scratching when I screwed it on to the razor. It put a noticible scratch on one of my base plates. It pissed me off and now I use them.

I don't use them. They are a pain. Plus I lose them.

I use them in all except the ones where the handle screws directly into the head like the Blackbird.
