Dipper Pens

Does anyone know if they still make "Dip Pens"? I remember the transition to ballpoint pens was taking place when I started school in the 50s. There were loads of surplus Dip pens and nibs from school districts and we had plenty of them at my house to fool around with. I enjoyed using them. I would like them for writing purposes only, not for drawing.

OldGuy, I have dip pens that I enjoy using.  Have a look.  These photos came from the Writing Instruments forum in the Lounge here on DFS.  There isn't much chatter about dip pens but lots on fountain pens.

The straight one is what I am talking about. Most I see for sale are listed for calligraphy, drawing, and cartoons. I really only care about normal writing. I guess I'll have to learn some about what type of nib is meant for what. I saw some custom made pens on an online site located in Tucson. Anyway I'll continue to do my homework on this and will probably start bugging you folks ion the Writing Instruments forum with questions.

The nibs (which I believe were called pens, instead of nibs, when these were the main writing instrument of the time) come in various styles and with a dip pen are easily switched out. The flex in a nib can vary from almost nothing to a lot and, depending on the pressure used when writing, can give the thin/thick line variation, as in my poor attempts shown here, or an even non-varying line width.

Been there, done that, own several T-shirts.

I've been poking around the internet trying to learn about vintage pens and ink. Wow, there are some really nice fountain pens out there! I love the old celluloid models, especially the ones with translucent swirl patterns. I'm afraid I'll have to have a couple of these. I'll tell you though, what is also catching my eye is all the old ink bottles and wells. I've never had any desire to collect things just to put on a shelf and admire, everything I have gets used. However I can see myself getting some of the old ink bottles that would normally be placed on a desk. And then, all the different types of ink! Heck I remember when you'd go to the Woolworths 5 & Dime and had just a choice of black, blue, and red India ink. I remember those funny little bottles they came in. OK, I can see a problem arising. I need to get a grip, better go clean the garage or something before I do something rash.

Well, I found a couple of those Antique Malls not far from where I live. Maybe I can get to one of them next week to check out pens and ink. I'm sure they'll have something. While I'm there I can also search for a 17 tooth Micromatic Clog Pruf and a GEM G Bar.
