My DFS Horizons shaving soap came today, along with matching aftershave balm and soap bars. I love the scent off the soap bars. Can't wait to try it.

I ordered the Horizons soap as soon as it was released. However, my wife confiscated the package and did not let me open it until Christmas. I did not use it until yesterday. Here is my review.

The Horizons scent is well crafted. I keep trying to pick out scent notes, but the scent is so complex that there is no hope of doing so. The scent contains a couple of notes that can cause issues for my sensitive skin (lemon and cinnamon), but the scent is so complex that the concentration of any particular note is small. The scent is mid-strong off the tub, but does open up somewhat once lathered. Here are the scent notes:

Top: Lavender, bergamot, lemon, ginger, mandarin orange, tangerine, basil, rosew**d
Middle: Honey, Cinnamon (synthetic), cashmere, jasmine sambac, Haitian vetiver, sandalwood, iris, carnation, patchouli, cedar
Base: Leather, amber, labdanum, benzoin, oak moss, musk, tobacco, tonka, bourbon vanilla

With the inclusion of lavender, oak moss and tonka, this can be considered to be a aromatic fougere, but it is so much more than that. The collaboration between the DFS staff and Joe of Black Mountain Shaving worked well.

The soap I purchased is the Kodiak base, which I prefer to the Murphy & McNeil Aon base, but Aon is excellent in its own right. The Kodiak base is easy to load directly from the tun using a damp brush. It is easy to lather, taking about 30 seconds when bowl lathering with vigorous agitation. The lather has excellent slickness, both primary and residual. The lather does an excellent job of protecting skin from irritation. The post shave feel is not greasy or heavy, but keep the face feeling supple and moisturized for 24 hours after the shave.

To my face, the primary difference between Kodiak and Aon is that the post shave feel will persist a few hours longer. I can get a great shave with either formula.

However, I have evaluated so many soaps over the years, I can usually look at the scent description and tell whether I will like it or not and whether it will cause problems for my skin. Although some citrus and spice notes can cause sensitivity issues, if a scent is sufficiently complex, I can usually use it without issue. Based on the description of this collaboration, I am pretty sure I will like it. I have so many soaps in my den that I only purchase soaps if they have high quality formulations and high quality scents. This one should check both boxes.

Very seldom that me jumps in here, but now me nerves got a bit....growled.

For sure it is understandeble that you and yer skin mote be reacting to things as citrus, peroxide and cows knows what, but.....BUT....why in the whole world burst out with yer allergies in a thread regarding a new givin'about of a soap that is made to fit the most but perhaps not you?

I just can't understand these kinda "hubba hubba gruff gruff comments made from over yonders and down below the prepared bunker for tomorrows".

IF YOU, now have probs with diff perfume oils, then take that in a thread made for either allergies or perhaps shaving allergies, but to take it here is just to stamp yer own "over  sensitive" foot on what most other probably wont go itchy or numb from. Aight?

Hope you get me and not just see me words as offensive...but please for cows sake...who gives a damn shit about how you and Terre de Hermes citrus reacts together in a thread about a new soap offered?

Or as we say in Sweden - you don't walk out in a swamp barefooted and then whines about that it's cold.

EDIT! - I just read your comment before and those could easily become as a negative for a product and ONLY based upon your single personal probs with allergies. That was what I reacted to and are damn tired of. As asking a Harley driver about motorcycles...the answer is = wrooooom, wrooooom and a hick-up in the next turnabout

2'nd EDIT - What i mean is - Test it first and until you shut the .... up about probable problems based on yer own weak skin
