I did the 30 minutes and still had difficulty with the knot. In the video, his pulls right out, easy peasy. I resorted to an elastic ribbon, like the physical therapy people use, and wrapped it around the knot, twisting it out.

And this was the final result.

I enlisted help for the last bit, as that glue is HARD in the bottom of the socket.

Hope that can help!

Thanks, that looks a massacre of the boars!! So clean out the socket with a Dremel tool.

I will have to get a photo soon, but right now most of the boars are having a soak! Literally in the trough, they are, the little piggies! While not refrigerated, I am trying the 12-24 hour soak, with intermittent lathering. What I can say is that there are 8 boar brushes being prepared for DecemBoar! Two bought new, three bought as knots and set in handles, 2 gifted to me, and 1 from the BST. If I count mixed badger/boar, then 9. I picked it up from the BST on a whim, and haven't been disappointed!

He talks about breaking in new boar knots and de-stinkifying them, but nothing about removing them.

Yep, I thought I was missing something. I've done the steam method Marko but some handles don't like it (Vintage especially) Lots of youtube videos doing it if you google it. Here's the one Paul probably intended.

When you have a brush with a metal ferrule around the knot (like many of the Semogues), what becomes of it if you replace the knot?
Is it usually salvagable?

I believe it is usable. The trick is getting the ferrule off the knot itself, as the knot is glued into the cup. Dave found this video and shared it in my journal. Maybe this might help!
