Yes jmudrick I agree. It seems impossible to ever change someones mind on an internet forum, unless of course they have an open mind, and that doesn't apply here. Sure, come here for advice with a closed mind. But then again, maybe he has the bank for the new production, one of a kind, zillion dollar hand made widgets.

Now that I think about it, every razor I own has been used by another man some time in the last 100 yrs. I sure hope the guy that originally owned my 1933 Schick Type E didnt have any cooties. I might have to go get myself a z-pack, decontaminate myself with bleach, and check myself into the hospital for round the clock observation.

But then again, I'm not a germophobe and my inoculation record is 2 pages long typed in 9 font. And because of this, I own multiple vintage SE razors thus expanding my knowledge and skills over multiple razors. Not just the one-off zillion dollar fancy widget.

I lived in Cambodia for ten years. Not a place for those looking for an A rating from health inspectors.

Whoa man. I did not intend to insult anyone. I am very open minded to an SE razor, which is why I started this thread. I did not start this thread to discuss vintage vs modern razors.

No insult taken. You are free to indulge in your own beliefs. You did not delineate what type of SE you were interested in, thus the suggestions for them. Maybe just a request for five of the most expensive current production non-injector razors made, and your discussion would be complete. Your initial post didnt say modern only, and the fourth response recommended vintage and you didnt clarify your self there either.

We are recommending vintage because they are more economical and provide excellent shaves. Since you cant shave with a used razor, you will be force to shell out big money for something you dont even know if you like. Good thing there are plenty of guys in the market for razors that have been used by other people, and you could recoup some of your money back if you decide you dont like it. But that is an expensive gamble for some of us.

That would be a rather foolish place to start. Anything in the 1912 family or an Autostrop VC1 would certainly tell you what you need to know with $140 dollars saved.

New razors and blades aren't autoclaved. Who knows what the heck kind of filth they may have come into contact with in those factories in China, India, Israel, Russia or down the streetConfused

Theres a difference between sanitized and sterilized, you really only need sanitized. Things that are sterilized will only remain so for a brief period, the world is full of bugs and stuff looking to live on something...or someoneBig Grin I learned a lot about this back when I was a home brewer - you're aiming for sanitized not sterilized. I think its the same with razors - there's probably more stuff living on your face than on that ebay razor you're reluctant to buy.

I agree that there is difference between sterile and sanitary. For most things sanitary is sufficient. But for practices that could lead to blood and body fluid exposure sterile is required. When you have your blood drawn the needle used is a single use item. It is disposed. It is not washed in some dawn dish soap and reused. Why? Because blood born pathogens are a serious problem. Viruses such as Hepatitis C can live on surfaces for several months if they are not properly cleaned and sterilized. I am an Orthopaedic surgeon and know the effort that goes into sterilizing surgical instruments. Yes...part of the reason for the sterilization process is to minimize the chance for a post operative bacterial infection. But, it is also to protect patients from blood borne pathogens like HIV and Hepatitis B&C. I simply am not willing to take the chance. Perhaps others are.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I will give the SE1 a try (I prefer SB). Which handle do you pair with it?

-Mark
I pair it with a Weber Classic handle. It's quite a heavy combination, but the weight of the apparatus is part and parcel of the overall effectiveness. I have an ATT Colossus handle on the way, which I imagine is even heavier.

If you prefer a (much) lighter razor, check out the Mongoose Alumigoose 2. It's a totally different shaving experience -- not as efficient, but as comfortable as it gets. And you still have the advantage of the Feather AC blades.

As an aside, I don't get some of the heated rhetoric in this thread regarding vintage vs. new razors. I've shaved with rusted pieces of metal used by God-knows-how-many other people and with shiny new stuff from modern razor makers, and I've had great shaves with both. For me, modern razors with Feather AC blades give me the best and most enjoyable shaves. You experiment, you have some fun, you find what works best for you. What's the big deal?

If pathogens can live for a few months then just outwait them. You present the solution with the problem. Let's see a high tech solution (autoclave) or just time... which would I choose? OK, I'm minus an autoclave so the solution is obvious. Most vintage razors haven't been used in years or decades. If it was a problem we'd definitely be aware of it. It's just not a problem. No one is suggesting you share needles.

One of these days, you will force me into buying a Kai Captain Excelia for $250 and you will be cursed :/

If you search the net, you'll come in under $250 -- though not under $200. But even at that price, I bought a second one, just in case -- it's that good. Let me know when the curse will be descending...  Evilgrin
