Christmas Cookies

This morning it was 19F outside.  First really cold day of the season. I was going to chop firewood.
My lovely bride, ML, suggested we bake test batches of Christmas cookies. It was an easy choice - we baked

ML partakes in a cookie swap each year. Bake 7 dozen cookies of the same type. Every participant does this. Than on swap day they have a party and ML comes home with 7 dozen assorted cookies.

ML takes her role seriously and each year we bake 3 or 4 test batches to try the recipes. This batch are decorated sugar cookies.

ML rolled out the day and cut the cookie shapes.


They get baked on a parchment lined baking sheet.


After the cookies are baked and cooled we made icing to decorate. Thinned with a touch of water we painted it on.


We experimented with shredded coconut, pearl sugar or just plain frosting.


The best part is the taste test. With a good cup of tea of course.


It was a good way to spend a chilly Sunday.

So, will these be the winning recipe that gets taken to the cookie swap?  They look too good to eat (though I would be tempted to bite off the head of that snowman ).

Yes it is. I've had a hankering to start in on bread.

I'm surprised that it was your 1st cold day, we've been there for 3 days now. Every autumn at the start of the cold we burn the punky wood. So we brought in a bunch of it and it's gotten far colder than autumn generally is.

I guess I should have said "First cold weekend". They predicted a cold front on Friday pushed in by high winds. We got the high winds but no cold. The winds kicked up again and we got cold temps on Saturday morning. But the sub 20 temps hit us Saturday night/Sunday morning.

No. I had suggested to ML that these would be too time comprehensive to make 7 dozen. They were
They taste great. There is sour cream in the dough. Just enough to cut the sweetness of the frosting. But still labor intensive.We will probably make another batch to include one or two in her cookie swap bag.

But right now the winner is the triple chocolate minty cookie on my napkin with the tea cup picture. Melted dark chocolate plus cocoa powder in the cookie dough. Then top with an Andes mint while hot. When the mint melts swirl it around to frost the cookie. These were simple and easy and taste great.

We still have to try a rosemary orange shortbread. Just the name intrigues me.
