hawns and wyze0ne , sports can be amazing and it gives you the opportunity to see the best and the worst of human behaviour both on and off the playing surface (field/ice/court/pitch etc) Baseball is like this (sometimes) epic chess match. football is like an 18th century set piece battlefield, Basketball is like a jazz improv set, except of course when LBJ is playing then its more like football played in front of officials in love with him and I'm not sure how to describe hockey - a good place to lose teeth.?

I liked that the pitcher that beaned Bautista wasn't just some nobody from the minors, he'd actually just been released after 3 years in prison - there's his footnote in the history of baseball. I thought that the Blue Jays pitcher who subsequently threw the obligatory retaliation beanball at Fielder showed a lower level of classlessness by just knocking it off his butt. It could have been a lot worse.

My only MLB games that i attended were in 1971 at Jarry Park in Montreal, double header Expos vs Pirates, it was pretty cool.

The whole retaliatory culture of sports is like gangs fighting turf wars. Here is a video of an infamous payback hit in the NHL by Tod Bertuzzi on Steve Moore. Moore had hit one of the Colorado players in an earlier game. Bertuzzi courageously sucker punched Moore from behind and then jumped on him driving Moore face first into the ice breaking his neck. Moore has never played another game, Bertuzzi served a suspension and played out the rest of his career and there was lots of talk about "the code" in the NHL. BS if you ask me.

It's funny, I love free jazz, Marko, but just never been a big basketball fan. Football, however, gets the details-oriented nerd in me tingling. I used to write for a couple of football websites and loved going on (and on and on and on) about all of the minutia and strategy. Bill Belichick might be a horrendously unlikable person, but I could listen to him talk about football for hours on end.

But I agree. "Codes" or whatever are stupid and only seem to escalate things. That hockey story is horrific. I don't follow much of it outside the Blues (and I was glad I was at the baseball game last night and not watching hockey), but I would be terrified to play that sport. Must take a special kind.

The best thing about baseball, however, is how it's not something you have to watch every second of. I spend most games working on CL stuff and having the on TV or the radio. You really get to know the nuances of the team and your favorite players. Plus, as long of a grind as the season is, it seems like baseball players seem to be the most lighthearted, which I love, until THE CODE rears its ugly head. It's funny that I was just trashing Rangers players, because I can't get enough of Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus horsing around

Oh, that sounds like a good idea. I'm going to have to try that one.

Thats funny, I suppose if you can't have some fun you might as well quit, with the number of games in a baseball season, what like 2000?Smile I played minor hockey as a kid back in the 1960s-70s and they were only just making kids wear helmets, no face shields or anything like that, I remember chicklets on the ice being a regular occurrence (teeth). Today with face shields being mandatory there's kids that make it to the pros with all of their own teeth!! What a concept!

I also like the minutia - any time I hear somebody say "don't bother me with the details, I'm a big picture guy" I figure, what an idiot, you can't see the big picture unless you understand the details first. Its all in the details.

I'm sure you've seen the movie Money Ball but have you read the book? Its better than the movie because there are a ton more details. Michael Lewis is a great writer and if you haven't read Money Ball, I highly recommend it, The Blind Side too.

It seemed to go pretty well. I love leviathan and I thought LQV would be dark enough to complement it. I didn't have time to check your pairings list so I just stepped off, no net.

Marko sadly I haven't read Moneyball. I need to badly. I'll put it next on my to-read list. I love the whole sabermetric movement. There's also one called The Only Rule Is It Has to Work about two SABR guys who run an independent minor league team that sounds interesting, too.

Also, I threw that up there as soon as I saw your comment. There's that sharp sweetness to the soap that I think LQV would complement nicely

I'm pretty sure you'll like Money Ball, even people who aren't baseball fans find the book interesting. Tells you a lot more about Billy Beane too. The boy had the good face, a hose and wheels but still never made it to the bigs. Who knew?
