Chasing the Closest...

my hair grows in like 4 different directions on my neck and my hair lays very flat and is curly...I've learned to not push it too much or else I'll get razor burn and/or ingrowns.  something else I noticed over the past few months being that's it's still very cold in the northeast is that I was exfoliating my skin far too often.

for me, my favorite razor for a 1 pass shave is the ikon tech with a super iridium blade.  the muhle r41 is really nice too, but I find that the tech, for me, is slightly smoother.

I used to rank the Feather blade as my #1 but its now slipped to #2 with the Polsilver Super Iridium taking over top spot. What a nice blade in aggressive razors. I don't have the ikon tech but I do have the ikon short comb which is pretty darn aggressive. I'll try it with the PSI for a 1 pass shave and see how I like it.

Feathers in anything but my R41 is uncomfortable.  Why?  Why do they work so well in the 41 but are so uncomfortable in anything else lol?

My Personna Reds are comfortable in anything I throw it into.

It has to have something to do with angle and maybe even rigidity. But it is odd isn't it!?

This is my experience as well, although I sold my R41 many many months before getting the iKon Tech, so I never did a direct comparison.

This has been brought up elsewhere before, but I have had much more success with doing fewer passes with an aggressive razor than having to achieve an acceptable result with a mild razor. However, these are very personal matters, and I should revisit a mild razor from time to time to see if my technique perhaps has improved to the point where I can get better results with one.

I used a Feather (fifth use) in the ikon short comb DOC yesterday and it was pretty nice. I couldn't restrain myself from doing a second and third pass though - there was just too much great lather on my brush and I couldn't waste it . P&B Pall Mall

Its funny but my experience has been similar - when I was just breaking in and using a EJ DE-89 I kept notes of my experiences with various blades. The Feather was scary but in the AS-D2 it was great, and its great in several other more aggressive razors. Most of the milder blades that worked very well for me in the DE-89 don't work nearly as well in more aggressive razors. Putting a Feather or a Kai into either my Wolfman or ATT razors is a wickedly efficient combination.

Yes, for sure.
For me, It's essential.

With a good technique, BBS is the normal result.
No matter wich kind of razor.
I started wetshaving in 1986, with my grandpa Gillette Rocket Flaretip.
It was my first razor, and I used for two decades.

Having me a bad dermatitis, BBS is the only way I can have no skin irritation in the day.
So, I need three passes everyday.
Otherwise, just wearing a shirt (even worse a coat) It's truely painful.

Quite often I read about miracle (high end) razors which provide two-passes BBS.
Few times the best in that moment It's called to give in one pass.
Mostly this call is from straight razor enthusiasts.
But in my experience, It's impossibile.

I can have a good DFS in one pass.
I can use straight razor freshly honed, no matter which grind.
I can use all kind of single edge blade on shavette.
I can use the best AC blades on the modern SE razors.
I can use the most efficient DE razors.
I can use the hi-tech multiblade razors.
No matter what ... with less than three passes I'll have skin issue after few hours.

The problem is the hair physiology.
Whisker comes with two angles:
• direction, on the plane of the skin
• inclination, out the plane of the skin
To cut at the skin level, It needs three passes with orthogonal directions between each.
It's physics.

That said, not all kinds of razor give the same result.
Specially on the neck area, safety razors works better.
Best of all IMHO are the modern SE with guarded AC blades.
If I had to choose just one shaving system for the rest of my live, It'd be this.
At the moment my fav couple is Colonial Razors "The General V1" Aluminium with Kai Captain MG "ProTouch".
Since I tried this, all other (many) options I have they've lost of appeal to me.

I'm fortunate in that my skin is not easily irritated, and that I've found the hardware that gives me a four pass, irritation-free BBS shave every time. That hardware is a Paradigm Diamondback with Gillette Silver Blue Blades. After four passes, no stubble is present, even when stretching the skin. Of course, faces and beards are highly individual things, so this combination might not work for someone else, but it's perfect for me. I'm very lucky.

Pierpaolo have you tried skipping WTG pass and starting XTG? That's how I can get that level of smoothness but with one less pass.

Yes, but for me XTG is the most difficult.
In my routine, It's the last. (WTG / ATG / XTGR)
Actually, when in hurry I do just one composite pass.
Very efficient, with smooth and lasting BBS result.

My dermatitis has no preferences about how.
It matter just to have a nice BBS.
After this, no problem all the day.
